絵草紙（ゑさうし）は理屈（りくつ）臭（くさ）きを嫌（きら）ふといへども
今（いま）そのりくつ臭（くさ）きをもつて。一と趣向（しゆかう）となし。
三冊に述（のべ）て幼童（ようどう）に授（さつく）。もし其理（そのり）を
得（う）ることあらば。天竺（てんぢく）の親分も。方 便（へん）を懐（ふところ）に
して退（しりぞ）き。魯国（ろこく）の伯父（おちい）も。其命を袖に
して去（さ）るへし。しからば我（わが）国の
なんども。清く浄（いさぎよし）とし給ん歟（か）

現代語訳
絵草子は理屈っぽいものを嫌うと言われているが、今回はその理屈っぽさを一つの趣向として、三冊にまとめて子供たちに教えることにした。もしその道理を理解することができれば、天竺（インド）の親分（釈迦）も方便を懐にして退き、魯国の伯父（孔子）もその教えを袖にして去るだろう。そうであれば、我が国の神々もきっと清らかで立派だとお認めくださるだろう。

Picture books are said to dislike overly preachy content, but now I shall make that very preachiness into a creative approach, compiling it into three volumes to teach children. If they can grasp these principles, even the chief of Tenjiku (the Buddha of India) would tuck away his expedient means and withdraw, and the uncle of Lu (Confucius) would sleeve his teachings and depart. If so, surely the deities of our country would also regard this as pure and admirable.
