There are thirty-six guardposts (mitsuke) at Edo Castle. In this recent earthquake, not a single one escaped damage. Above all, the damage to the Yotsuya Gate—from the roof of its turret (yagura) down to the stone walls—is roughly as depicted in the illustration. Moreover, since castle gates are proverbially cited as examples of sturdy construction, one should take note of the great ferocity of the earthquake's force from the fact that even these were so severely damaged. The Ōte Gate, the Tōhō Gate, the Babасаki Gate, and others were completely destroyed and left without trace of their former shape, and so were not illustrated here. The extent of the destruction across various locations defies description by brush alone. Although there have been many earthquakes since ancient times, one has never heard of destruction on such a scale as this occasion. It is said to have been an unprecedented extraordinary event since the time of the Lord's entry into the domain (i.e., since the founding of the Tokugawa shogunate in Edo).
