When one climbs to a high place and looks down at the ground below, the eyes grow dizzy and the legs tremble. This is because the mind instinctively perceives that a single misstep would surely mean the loss of one's life, and so the whole body suddenly shudders with fear. Now, among the several places that collapsed in this great disaster, more than twenty ken of the stone walls alongside Hanzō Gate came cascading down into the moat; the ancient pine trees, once praised in verse as "dragons coiling after the snow has cleared," had their branches shattered and their roots exposed, lying sprawled across the road; the cut stone blocks, likened in verse to folding screens, were thrown into disarray, shaking and crumbling—and in some cases jutting out into mid-air, threatening at any moment to fall upon one's head. The sight, looking up at it,

was terrifying; and those who came to witness it reported that they could not even take a step forward, but could only crawl their way through. It is precisely as those people described it that I have reproduced the scene here in illustration, in order to leave it as a tale to be told by future generations.
