（前頁より続き）焼失の分 六十一軒。○武家方の分 二万百四十八軒。○神社仏閣合わせて一万二千百二十五か所。

○御屋敷方 二十三万九千三百七十九（か所）。○寺院方 八千九百四十八（か所）。○町家 十一万四千六百五十二（か所）。惣合わせて三十六万二千九百七十九か所となった。
この内、焼失の分に含まれる金銀・財宝・衣類・調度は、ただ一時に滅却して焼け野原となってしまったことは、まことに嘆くべき大変（たいへん）である。
○その後、昼夜を問わず地震が度々起こるため、諸人が恐れをなすこと並々ならぬところ、何者かが言い出したのか、「今夜は必ずきびしい地震がある」などと誰が言うともなく世間に言い伝わり、その難を避けるため、辻々の少しでも広い場所には、戸や障子をもって屋根とし、あるいは荷物・屏風にて囲いを作り、下には筵（むしろ）・薦（こも）を敷いて野宿をする者が、町々におびただしくいた。しかしその後は大した余震もなく、それで各家々に引き退いたのは十月の半ばのことである。
しかしながら、類焼した者に至っては、引き込むべき家がないため、あの筵張りの小屋にいて、大雨の節などその艱難は推し量るべきである。
そこで御公儀様より、窮民お救いのために御小屋を建ててくださり、「勝手次第に願い出るべし」とのお触れにより、野宿の者はみなここに至り、日毎に炊き出しの御飯をいただき、それぞれの渡世を営むことができた。まことにありがたき御代の御恵みである。

Among these, the gold, silver, treasures, clothing, and furnishings consumed in the fires were wiped out in an instant, leaving nothing but scorched wasteland — truly a catastrophe most lamentable.
○ After the earthquake, tremors continued to occur day and night without rest, and the people's fear was extraordinary. Then someone — it is unclear who started it — spread word throughout the city that "there will certainly be a severe earthquake tonight," and the rumor passed from person to person without any clear source. In order to avoid the anticipated disaster, people in open spaces at crossroads throughout the city constructed shelters using sliding doors and shoji screens as roofs, surrounded themselves with luggage and folding screens, and spread straw mats (mushiro) and rush matting (komo) on the ground to sleep outdoors. Such people could be found in great numbers throughout the neighborhoods. However, no further major tremors occurred, and people returned to their homes around mid-October.
Those whose homes had been destroyed by fire, however, had no house to return to, and remained in those rough mat-walled shelters; one can only imagine their hardship during heavy rains and storms.
Therefore, the honorable Shogunal authorities erected relief shelters for the destitute and issued a proclamation stating that people should come forward at their own discretion to seek assistance. All those sleeping outdoors gathered there, received cooked rice distributed each day, and were able to resume their livelihoods. Truly, this was a benevolent blessing of this august reign.
