猶不忘野宿（なをのしゆくをわすれす） 必莫廃倹約（かならすけんやくをすつることなかれ）
故末代徳者（かるかゆへにまつたいのとくしや） 先可案此地震（まつちしんをあんすへし）
是名聞之始（これめうもんのはしめ） 身終勿焼失（みおはるまてせうしつすることなかれ）

現代語訳
損壊した家屋の友（仲間）と交わらなければ／誰が八方（あらゆる方向）の火事を消すことができようか
なお野宿（のじゅく）のことを忘れるな／必ず倹約を捨てることなかれ
それゆえ末代（まつだい）の徳ある者は／まず（この）地震を深く考えるべし
これが名聞（みょうもん・名声・世の評判）の始まりである／身が終わるまで（家屋を）焼失させることなかれ

If one does not associate with companions whose homes have been damaged — who then will extinguish the fires raging in all directions?
Do not forget the hardship of sleeping outdoors — never abandon frugality and thrift.
Therefore, those who would be virtuous for all generations to come — must first reflect deeply upon this earthquake.
This is the beginning of (building) a good name and reputation — do not let (your home or property) be lost to fire until the very end of your life.
