**[Right folio, upper section]** …one must attend [to the mother] with all due care. If even the slightest strain is placed on the body after childbirth, it can become a lifelong illness. One must be thoroughly mindful of this. As for the newborn child, one should wait one full day and night before nursing. Until then, one should frequently use *Kanren-tō* (a medicinal decoction): Licorice root (*kanzō*) / Coptis (*ōren*) / Cinnabar (*shinsha*) These three ingredients should be decocted, absorbed into silk cloth, and given to the infant to drink. After breastfeeding has begun, the infant will not easily take this medicine. Before nursing, one should administer this medicine to purge the infant of *taidoku* (fetal toxins). The child will then grow up free of illness. Regarding bathing the infant: in winter, bathing too frequently is not advisable. Shaving the lanugo (downy birth hair) is best done on the thirtieth day. In summer, it should be shaved earlier. Bathing should also be done more frequently in summer. Infants should always be fed to only eight-tenths of their capacity. Their clothing should also err on the side of being lighter/cooler. This is the foremost principle of healthy upbringing. A long life is indeed a thing to be celebrated. **[Lower section]** *(Illustration: Visiting the Ujigami shrine [birth shrine visit])* --- **[Left folio, upper section]** *(Illustration: Betrothal gifts)* - Sea bream: one set - Sash (*obi*): one length - Crimson silk: as many *tan* (bolts) as deemed appropriate --- **[Left folio, lower section]** **On the proper conduct and manners of women** When drinking sake, one should tuck the left knee under, overlap it with the right knee, lean slightly to the left, rest the left hand on the floor, take the cup with the right hand, receive it gently, and drink with the head slightly bowed. When receiving food (*sakana*), one should hold out one's hands, produce a *hanagami* (pocket paper), and place the food upon it. When passing food to someone, it should be placed on a stand and not handed directly. When pouring sake, one should grasp the spout of the *chōshi* (sake vessel) with the right hand, rest the left hand gently on the lid, and pour. The left knee should be raised. One must take care not to lean over the guest. Regarding sitting at a meal tray (*zen*): one should not sit directly facing the tray head-on. One should angle slightly to the left. With the right hand, take the lid of the rice bowl and transfer it to the left hand; then with the right hand take the lid of the soup bowl, stack it on top of the rice bowl lid, and place them to the left side. Then, take up the chopsticks, eat two bites of rice, and then sip the soup. After eating rice, one proceeds to eat the side dishes (*sai*). Moving back and forth between soup and side dish repeatedly is called *utsuri-bashi* (wandering chopsticks) and is considered improper. After one or two bites of rice, one may then eat either soup or side dishes. When there is a second tray (*ni no zen*), once one has sipped the soup from the second tray, one should not return to eat the side dishes of the first tray; one should eat the side dishes of the second tray. Grilled items may be broken apart slightly, but one must never turn them over to show the underside. Pickles (*kō no mono*) are technically a side dish for rice porridge (*yuzuke*), and it is better not to eat them [during the main meal]. 〇 Regarding the placing of meal trays: holding it with both hands, one brings it out to the guest's knee…
