(Continued from previous page) ...shall be dealt with strictly in accordance with the great regulations. As the lord is still in his youth, the governance of the domain requires, above all else, the maintenance of peace and tranquility. Each person should bear this in mind, and even if a place is not explicitly prohibited by law, visiting places of leisure and amusement on repeated occasions is a matter requiring proper judgment and restraint. This matter shall be communicated at each assembly. 1. On the 9th day of the 12th month, the foot courier (otomo hikyaku) Yano Sandayū (Masafusa) arrived in Fukui from Edo. Accordingly, the various monthly duty officers were summoned to the residence of the monthly duty chief retainer, Koma Tatemaki (■Ō), and the following was conveyed to them: Arrival of the Foot Courier The lord continues to be in excellent spirits. In particular, on the 27th of last month, a joint official letter (gobusho) from the Senior Councillors (rōjū) arrived, and on the following 28th day, the lord's representative (omondai), the Lord of Dewa no Kami, proceeded to Edo Castle, where it was proclaimed — in accordance with the petition — that the lord's marriage arrangement (oengumi) with the daughter of the Lord of Owari Chūnagon had been approved. This is a matter of the utmost joy and gratitude. It was ordered that this matter be communicated to the retainers (samurai-chū). Regarding marriage arrangements involving the Three Gosanke Houses, it is said that petitions from either party are not permitted under any circumstances. In the case of our domain, however, owing to its special status, a petition and formal notification (odachisho) were submitted through the duty councillor (goyōban), and the matter was resolved favorably. This reflects the great honor and prestige of our lord, and all should regard it as a cause for deepest gratitude and joy. That is all.
