[Continued from previous page] At the time when Ogimaru was proclaimed to succeed as head of the household, given his young age, it was decreed that any matter upon which the house elders could not reach a unanimous decision should be referred for consultation to Hitotsubashi-sama. By means of this arrangement, the administration and governance of the household and domain have been kept well-ordered and disciplined, for which [we] feel most deeply grateful. Furthermore, though [the household] has been unable to make private inquiries [directly], [Ogimaru] has been received in attendance at both the O-maru [inner compounds of Edo Castle], and on each occasion has been granted gifts by the Three Gosho-sama [the three senior Tokugawa branch houses], and the nature of these private and gracious acts is of such surpassing excellence that there are no words adequate to express [our gratitude]. Though [we] feel it most presumptuous to ask anything further, since the late Hyōbu-no-Taifu harbored the aforementioned heartfelt wish, if a decree could be issued — even one item at a time from among this house's former traditional protocols — so that from Ogimaru's early years onward, it might be openly and formally restored to the standing of former times, then the late Hyōbu-no-Taifu's dying wish would be fulfilled. [It would demonstrate that] the lineage and standing of this house has been taken into consideration, that the framework established for Ogimaru — who is the son of Hitotsubashi-sama placed into this house — has been properly set, and [we] would feel this as a matter of exceptional gratitude. All members of the household and domain, from the highest to the most humble, would feel that much more at ease, and would regard it as a matter of manifold and most grateful fortune. As for the substance of what has been set forth above — once Ogimaru has grown to maturity, there may be matters that would be difficult for him to raise himself. Were that to be the case, the heartfelt wish of the late Hyōbu-no-Taifu would come to naught, which [we] find most lamentable. There is no one else to whom [we] can address this matter. Since Your Honorable Presence has, from the very time when Ogimaru was proclaimed an adopted heir, long been aware of Hyōbu-no-Taifu's true feelings and innermost thoughts, and since there has also been occasion to convey certain matters through private and informal channels, [we] humbly venture to bring this to your august attention. In any and all matters, [we pray] that Ogimaru, as he grows, will dedicate himself with the utmost earnestness to his service, never neglecting the governance [of the domain]...
