現代語訳
幽霊は魍魎と段々深く語らい、ついに懐妊して当たる十月になったので、安々と平産したが、玉のような人間の子なりとは言えない。魍魎は大いに驚き、化け物の子がこのような満足な顔つきでは外聞も悪い。鼻でも逆さまについているか、口でも耳の際まで裂けているというような事でなければ、片端とは言われず、このような満足な子を産んだことは因果の通り也。
これというのも、この魍魎が今まで人間を取り食らったこともなく、ついに殺生いような事をしたことがないゆえ、その報いにて向きずの倅を設けたものであろう。仲間の手合いの笑い草、いかがしようと心を痛め暮らしていた。
「とんだ器量のいい玉のような子を産んだと叫んだからねえの」
「これ大きな声で、いやな外聞が悪い」
「殺生をしない親の因果が子に向かって、こんなに三十二相揃ってどこにひとつ悪い分のない子を産んだと見えた。せめてこの子の罪滅ぼしに見世物にでも出して、今度の回りは轆轤首でも生まれるだろう。満足な子が可愛いとまさか捨てられもせず、不憫やな」
英語訳
The ghost and the demon spirit grew closer in their conversations day by day, and finally she became pregnant. When the tenth month came, she gave birth easily and safely, but the child was not what you would call a jewel-like human child. The demon spirit was greatly surprised - having a demon child with such a normal appearance would be bad for his reputation. Unless the nose were attached upside down, or the mouth split all the way to the ears, it wouldn't be called deformed. That such a normal child was born was indeed the way of karma.
This was because this demon spirit had never devoured humans until now, and had never committed any acts of killing, so as a reward for this, he was blessed with a properly formed son. Worried about becoming a laughingstock among his demon peers, he spent his days in anguish over what to do.
"What a strangely handsome, jewel-like child you've given birth to!" he cried.
"Hey, keep your voice down - this is embarrassing and bad for our reputation!"
"The karma of parents who don't kill has manifested in their child - born with all thirty-two divine marks complete, without a single flaw anywhere. Perhaps to atone for this child's sins, we should put him in a sideshow. Maybe next time around, a rokurokubi will be born instead. Since the normal child is beloved, we certainly can't abandon him - how pitiful this is!"
