東の海を越え、また東の山を越えて、
杖と草履でいく度往き来したことか。
家には七十歳の親がいるというのに、
千里の遠さをどれほどの人が知ろうか。
故国の皇都(京)は夢の中では近く、
鴨川のほとりへと夢は飛んでゆく。
花見の季節には間に合わなかったが、
それでも納涼の季節には間に合おう。
些細なことも補うことができぬまま、
ただ俸禄(代耕禄)を受けるだけの身。
暇を賜り、慈しみ深い親のもとへ帰省する——
君恩はなんと手厚く、温かいことか。

**十一月八日の雪、坡公(蘇東坡)の「聚星堂詩」の韻に次し、その体を倣う**
自分の人生など葉のように軽いものと気にもせず、
衣を質に入れて酒を買い、初雪を愛でる。
寒雲は際なく広がり、昼もなお薄暗くかすんでいる。
舞い戻る風は勢いを助け、その勢いはこの上なく壮絶。
漁師の船の篷(とま)は、ぼうっとぼやけて見え、
酒屋の旗竿は凍えて折れそうだ。
牟麦(もうばく)豊作の兆しを知るべし、
そしてまた天地の塵埃が滅せられることを喜ぼう。
禁体(禁体詩)は昔から言葉を作るのが難しく、
白戦(素材を使わぬ詩戦)はまして肘を引かれる苦しさ。
一筋の水はわずかに碧琉璃の色を残し、
千本の林はことごとく黄夾纈(黄色の絹のような色彩)を失う。
(某書を惜しみ、かの者は何のために筆を取ったのか、才を誉めても私は潔しとしない。)
日が出ればたちまち消え尽きてしまうとて嘆くことなかれ、
それは人の世の一瞬の過ぎ去りゆく姿を見るためなのだ。
廬陵(欧陽脩)や眉山(蘇東坡)の跡はすでに古くなり、
客は去り、樽は空となって、また何を語ろうか。
雪に向かって狂ったように詩を吟じ、今古を慨嘆し、
唾壺を撃ち砕く如意鉄よ。

**横山仲祥画史に贈る**
江(淀川か)の北に横山氏がいて、
老齢の身でずっと農耕の中に暮らしていた。
家譜を千年さかのぼって遠祖を尋ねれば、
参議・左大弁の野公(横山野公か)に至る。
雲南の君もまた横山氏、
思えば私と同じ宗族であろうか。
雲と江が千里の外を隔てていたのに、
まさかここでばったりと相逢うとは。
詩を売り画を売るとはいかなる生業か、
落ちぶれた境遇はおおよそ同じである。
あえて貧賤の身をもって氏族を語れば、
祖先の芳名を汚すことになるのではと恐れる。
聞けば、(横山氏の)相公(先祖の高官)は至孝にして、
かつ忠直であり、貧しくても施しを好み、陰徳が多く、
上は公卿として、下は士庶に至るまで、
その徳を怪しむ者なく、子孫には千億の繁栄があった。
ああ、男たるもの世に在っては、自ら軽んずることなかれ。
時には布衣(無官の者)が簪纓(高貴な官位)に勝ることもある。
世上に紛々たる名家の後裔よ、
誰が天に在る祖先の霊を慰めるのか。

**Three Poems on Returning Home to Visit Parents**
Across the eastern sea and over the eastern mountains,
How many times have I traveled back and forth with staff and straw sandals?
At home waits a parent of seventy years—
Who among others truly knows the ache of a thousand leagues away?
In dreams, the imperial capital of my homeland feels near,
And my dreaming mind flies to the banks of the Kamo River.
Though I will miss the season for viewing cherry blossoms,
I shall still arrive in time for the cool relief of summer evenings.
I have been of no use whatsoever, not even in the smallest matter,
Yet I sit and receive my stipend (代耕禄, the salary given in place of tilling the land).
Now I am granted leave to visit my beloved parent—
How generous and warm is the grace of my lord!

**On the Eighth Day of the Eleventh Month, Snow Falls: Following the Rhyme of Dongpo's (Su Shi's) "Juxing Tang" Poem and Imitating Its Style**
Caring nothing that my life is as light as a fallen leaf,
I pawn my coat, buy wine, and savor the first snow of the season.
Cold clouds stretch endlessly; even midday is dim and hazy.
Swirling winds lend force to the snow—its power is strangely overwhelming.
The fisherman's boat canopy becomes a blur of indistinction,
And the tavern's signpost banner seems about to freeze and snap.
Know this: it is an omen of abundant wheat and barley to come;
Rejoice, too, that the dust and grime of heaven and earth are being washed away.
The "forbidden-style" poem (禁体詩) has always been difficult to compose,
And the "white battle" style (白戦) is all the more constrained and taxing.
A single stream barely retains the color of blue-green lapis lazuli,
While a thousand forest trees have altogether lost their gold-dyed brocade hues.
(Some lament lost writings; what purpose did that person have in taking up the brush?
I have no desire to be praised for talent under such terms.)
Do not lament that the sun rises and swiftly melts it all away—
It is as if one witnesses the fleeting, vanishing nature of this human world.
The traces of Luling (Ouyang Xiu) and Meishan (Su Shi) are already ancient and faded;
The guests have gone, the jug stands empty—what more is there to say?
I chant poems wildly in the face of the snow, lamenting past and present,
Like the iron ruyi staff that strikes and shatters the spittoon.

North of the river lives a man of the Yokoyama clan,
Who has long resided in the fields and gardens in his declining years.
Tracing his family genealogy back a thousand autumns to a distant ancestor,
One arrives at Sangi (Consultant) and Sadaiben (Left Grand Controller) Lord Yashiro (野公).
You, the gentleman of Unnan, are also of the Yokoyama clan—
Come to think of it, we must share the same ancestral lineage.
Separated by clouds and rivers a thousand leagues apart,
Who could have expected this chance encounter, meeting face to face?
Selling poems, selling paintings—what a way to make a living;
Our state of having fallen in the world is roughly the same.
If I were to speak of clan lineage from so humble and poor a station,
I fear I would only bring disgrace upon the good name of my ancestors.
I have heard that the great minister (of your ancestral line) was supremely filial,
Forthright in speech, generous in giving despite poverty, and rich in hidden virtue;
From the highest nobles down to the common people,
None questioned his virtue, and his descendants multiplied to a thousand and more.
Ah, a man in this world must never hold himself cheaply!
There are times when one dressed in plain cloth surpasses those wearing the ornaments of high rank.
Among the many self-proclaimed noble lineages of this world,
Who is there to comfort the spirits of the ancestors watching from heaven?
