夫筭は古より筭勘の知者色々珍敷
法定おかるゝといへとも近代世間にとり
おこなふ書物を見るに塵劫記四角問
答円法四巻闕疑集此書おい【於以ヵ】我人け
いこのためにもてあそふと見へたり然
に此四集いつれもおろか成事なく愚
人のおよふ所にあらすさま〳〵の手立有之
といへとも四集ともに少つゝのかわりにて
法を勘かへけいこをつとめは我知になさ

方圓秘見集 上 序
そもそも算術は古くから、算勘（計算）に通じた知者たちによって、さまざまな珍しい法が定められてきたとはいえ、近代（近ごろ）世間に広まり用いられている書物を見るに、『塵劫記』・『四角問答』・『圓法四巻』・『闕疑集』、これらの書はいずれも、我々が稽古のために親しみ用いているものと見受けられる。しかしながら、この四書はいずれも拙いところなど少しもなく、凡人の及ぶところではない。さまざまな手立て（方法）が記されているとはいえ、四書ともに少しずつ異なるところがあり、その法を考え替え、稽古を積み重ねれば、自らの知識とすることができる。

Hōen Hiken-shū, Volume 1 — Preface
From ancient times, various remarkable methods have been established by those knowledgeable in arithmetic and calculation. However, looking at the books that have been widely used in the world in recent times — the *Jinkōki*, the *Shikaku Mondō*, the *Enpō Shikan* (Four Volumes on Circular Methods), and the *Ketsugi-shū* — these works appear to be the texts that people have taken up and used for their study and practice. Yet none of these four collections contains anything deficient or crude; they are beyond the reach of the ordinary person. Although each contains various methods and approaches, the four collections each differ from one another in small ways, and if one ponders and reconsiders their methods and applies oneself diligently to practice, one can make their knowledge one's own.
