Yanagawa Date Family Documents

Main Text
Regarding my ancestors, from the generation of Ko-Yanagawa Nakatsukasa-no-Taifu Morimune
to my great-great-grandfather Ko-Yanagawa Deiban, I do not know from which generation
we began receiving fiefs, as no such tradition has been passed down to me.
My grandfather, of the same family name, Gyōbu, held a fief worth eighty kan-mon
of rice. After his death from illness, my late father,
of the same family name, Nakatsukasa, inherited it without change. Later, when he was sent to
the border area of Notezaki Village in Esashi County, he received an additional twenty kan-mon
as an increase. Furthermore, during the reign of Lord Giyama,
during the general land survey in the Kan'ei era, through the measuring rod survey,
he was granted a fief of twenty kan-mon as a deputy, and also
for the newly cultivated fields of Noyachi adjacent to the Notezaki Village fief,
the measured value of seventeen kan and ninety-four mon
was granted on the tenth day of the second month of Manji 3, making the total land worth one hundred
thirty-seven kan and ninety-four mon. Until the tenth month of Kanbun 10, Nakatsukasa was ordered to retire, and the aforementioned fief
was granted to me without change, as conveyed
through Harada Kai in Edo on the twenty-sixth day of the tenth month of the same year.
Also, I was appointed to the magistrate position,
and as messengers from Edo, Amano Magodayu and
Anewa Hachirōemon were sent down. On the fourth day of the twelfth month of Kanbun 12,
at the residence of the late Kouchi Shima, these two men
accompanied Shima in conveying the appointment. In the fifth month of Enpō 3,
in the eleventh month, I was summoned before His Lordship, and after consultation with Lord ?kei-ji and
the Council of Elders, it was directly conveyed
that the fief would be converted to a stipend for my official duties,
making the total land worth
Additionally, adjacent to the Notezaki Village fief land,
Lower section
for the newly cultivated fields of Noyachi, the measured substitute value totaling
six thousand and fifty-seven mon was granted on the twenty-third day of the eleventh month of Enpō 3, and on the twenty-first day of the third month of the same fifth year,
for the newly cultivated fields of Noyachi adjacent to the same village's fief land,
the measured substitute value of one hundred seventy-six mon was
granted. Currently, in total,
I have received these lands. The above.
