その後も何度も揺れが続いております。しかしながら、最初ほどの激しさではありませんが、とにかく屋内には入りがたく、皆々庭で今日まで過ごしております。領内のことはまだ道が通じていないところが多いため、詳しいことはわかりません。小松原村・矢代宿などでは家屋の倒壊が多いとのことです。善光寺大門町あたり、石堂と申す所より出火しました。これも地震で潰れた家からの出火で、その他各所からも出火しており、今朝になってもいまだに火が消えておりません。ただ今八つ時（午後二時頃）前でありますが、まだ燃えているとのことです。もちろん善光寺本堂は残りましたが、その他の諸堂・社、大勧進もみな焼失しました。開帳中で旅人が特別に多かったところ、大方は亡くなったようだと聞いております。
犀川もどこかで山が崩れたのか、水が流れてこず、足の黒ぶし（くるぶし）の上あたりの水位で渡ることができたとのことです。今にも水が出るだろうと皆恐れており、その近辺の者どもは山へ登っているとのことです。
普通の地震とは違い、時々山で音がしておりますので、もしかして浅間山の噴火ではないかと思っておりますが、まだわかりません。今日も又庭に出ております。稲荷山もみな焼けたとのことです。
幸いにも（松代では）出火がなく、まずは安心いたしました。そちら（江戸）はいかがかと御案じ申し上げます。江戸まで地震が及んだとは思われませんが、こちらはいずれも無事で、城内にも格別の破損はありませんので、御安心ください。上田辺りはどうなのかわかりません。飯山でも出火したとの風聞があります。何事も未曾有の大地震に初めて遭遇いたしました。今日まで夏のように（屋外で）おりますが、体の具合が悪くなるようなこともありませんので、御心配なさいませんよう。そちらのことも案じております。以下略。

The earthquakes have continued repeatedly since then. Although not as severe as the first one, we cannot bring ourselves to enter the buildings, and everyone has been living in the garden until today. As for the domain's territory, many roads are still impassable, so we are unable to obtain detailed information. We have heard that many houses have collapsed in Komatsubara Village and Yashiro Post Town. A fire broke out from a place called Ishidō, around Daimon-chō near Zenkoji Temple—this too started from houses that had been destroyed by the earthquake. Fires have also broken out in various other locations, and even this morning the fires have not been extinguished. Although it is now just before the Hour of the Rooster (around 2 p.m.), we are told the fires are still burning. Although the main hall of Zenkoji Temple has survived, all the other halls, shrines, and the Daikanjin (the temple's administrative headquarters) have all burned down. As the temple was in the middle of a special public viewing (kaichō) and there were exceptionally many travelers present, I understand that most of them have perished.
As for the Sai River, it seems that a landslide has occurred somewhere, and the water has stopped flowing—reportedly it could be forded at a depth no higher than the ankle. Everyone fears that flooding may come at any moment, and those living in the nearby areas have fled to the mountains.
Unlike ordinary earthquakes, there have been occasional rumbling sounds from the mountains, and I wonder whether this might be an eruption of Mt. Asama, though this is not yet known. Today again, I am outside in the garden. I have also heard that Inariyama has burned down entirely.
Fortunately, there has been no fire outbreak (in Matsushiro), and for now I am relieved. I am concerned about how things are with you there (in Edo). I do not think the earthquake reached as far as Edo, but everyone here is safe and there is no particular damage to the castle, so please be at ease. I do not know how things are in the Ueda area. There is a rumor that fires have broken out in Iiyama as well. This is the first time I have encountered such an unprecedented great earthquake.
