（前頁からの続き）同様に赤く濁っていて困っております。濁りを量ってみたところ、平常時は一升の水が五百匁（もんめ）であるのに対し、今回は三十五匁も増えておりました。つまり一升の水に三十五匁分の土が混じっている状態でございます。そちらの赤土をかき混ぜてみてご覧になれば、おおよそのご想像がつくことと存じます。
一、今回の地震は、あちらの地では戌亥（北北西）の方角から午寅（南南東）の方向へ揺れたとのことでございます。そのため、少し離れた場所でも、その揺れの方向から外れた場所では倒壊した家が少なく、またわずかの違いで全壊した箇所もあるとのことです。まことに中之条などは運がよく、これ以上ないほどの幸いであったとのことです。須坂などは善光寺から二・三里も離れているにもかかわらず焼失はなく、飯山は八里も離れているのに、城をはじめ市中が全壊・全焼したとのことです。二十四日に倒壊しなかった場所も、その後の余震によって倒壊したところが各所にあったとのことです。善光寺町では土蔵が一棟だけ倒壊せずに残り、焼け残った家で家族全員が生き残った家が一軒ありました。その中の老人などは土蔵の中にいて死ぬ覚悟をしていたところ、火が掛かった際に熱いだけで難なく助かったという、幸運な者もいたとのことです。総じて宿場や村々の焼け残った場所でも、鍋・釜・土器類はみな割れて何もなく、大変困っているとのことです。
一、当年（今年）はこの地（新潟）での米価が安いため、当地にお越しになって以来初めて入米（移入米）が多く、土地が大変賑わっております。もともと入船が多いのは他国の米が高く当国の米が安いという状況でなければ賑わいません。ところで現在、上米は一升七十文ほどで、一両で九斗四・五升ほどになっております。当地においでになった頃は五十五・六文から六十文近くでしたが、その後は次第に上がっております。
右の地震についての話は確かな事実でございますので、書き記してお送り申し上げます。

When I measured the turbidity, I found that while ordinary water weighs 500 monme per shō, during this period it weighs 35 monme more. That is to say, it is water with 35 monme worth of soil stirred into every shō. If you stir some of the red soil from your area into water and observe it, you will be able to imagine approximately what it looks like.
One matter: Regarding this earthquake, people in that area are saying that the shaking ran from the direction of Inu-I (north-northwest) toward Uma-Tora (south-southeast). Because of this, even in places only a short distance away, those locations that fell outside that direction of shaking had fewer collapsed houses, while others just slightly within that line suffered total collapse. Indeed, places like Nakanojo were exceedingly fortunate. Suzaka, though two or three ri distant from Zenkoji, suffered no fires, while Iiyama, eight ri away, had its castle and the entire town center totally collapsed and burned. Even places that had not collapsed by the 24th were later destroyed in subsequent aftershocks at various locations. In the town of Zenkoji, there was one storehouse (dozō) that survived without collapsing, and one household was found where the entire family survived in a house that escaped the fire. Among them, an elderly person had resigned themselves to death while sheltering inside the storehouse, but when the fire reached it, they felt only heat and survived without difficulty — a truly fortunate soul. In general, even in areas of post towns and villages that escaped the fire, all pots, cauldrons, and earthenware were broken and gone, causing great hardship.
One matter: This year, since rice prices are low in this area (Niigata), there has been more imported rice than ever since your visit to this place, and the town is thriving. Naturally, a large number of incoming ships only occurs when rice prices are high in other provinces and low in this one. Currently, premium rice (jōmai) is about 70 mon per shō, or roughly 9 to 4–5 shō per ryō. Around the time of your visit here, it was between 55–56 mon and nearly 60 mon, and since then it has been gradually rising.
