○怡顔斎が言うには、「（桐谷桜は）別名を八重一重（やえひとえ）、また別名を車返し（くるまがえし）ともいう。花の中でも第一品である。一枝の中に八重咲きと一重咲きが混じって咲き、その中でも八重が多く一重は少ない。江戸桜（えどざくら）に似ているが色が薄い。江戸桜はすべて八重咲きであるが、桐谷は八重と一重が混じり合っている。もとの木は鎌倉の桐谷から出たものであるため、この名が付いた。ある古老の言うには、この花を一人は八重咲きであると言い、また別の一人は一重咲きであると言い、その争論が決着せず、二人は車を引き返してもう一度見てみると、一木に八重と一重（が混じって咲いていた）、

○Igan-sai said: "This variety is also known by the name 'Yae-hitoe' (Double-and-Single), and yet another name, 'Kuruma-gaeshi' (Turning Back the Carriage). It is the finest of all cherry blossoms. On a single branch, double-petaled and single-petaled blossoms intermingle; among these, the double-petaled blossoms are more numerous and the single-petaled ones fewer. It resembles the Edo cherry blossom, but its color is paler. The Edo cherry is entirely double-petaled, whereas the Kirigayatsu has both double and single petals intermingled. The original tree came from Kirigayatsu in Kamakura, hence the name. According to a certain elderly person, one observer declared this flower to be double-petaled, while another declared it to be single-petaled; unable to resolve the dispute, the two turned their carriage back to look again, and found that a single tree bore both double and single [blossoms]—
