其二
愁（うれゐ）をも問（と）ひ吏（り）のあやまりをもたゞさむが為（ため）に御（おん）使（つかひ）
をつかはされけりされば 勅使（ちよくし）を讃岐（さぬき）の国（くに）へ下（くだ）され
たりけるに大師 幼（いとけなく）して諸（もろ〳〵）の童子（どうじ）に交（まじ）はりて遊（あそ）び
給（たま）ひけるを見（み）奉（たてまつ）りて馬（うま）よりおり礼拝（らいはい）して曰（いはく）公（こう）は凡人（ぼんにん）
にあらず其（その）故（ゆゑ）は四（し）天王（てんわう）白（びやく）傘（ざん）をとりて前後（ぜんご）に相した
がへり定（さだめ）知（しり）ぬこれ前生（ぜんしやう）の聖人（しやうにん）なりといふことをと
其（その）後（のち）隣（りん）里（り）の人 驚（おどろ）きあやしみ御名（おんな）を神童（しんどう）とぞ申

その二
（人々の）憂いを問い、役人の過ちを正すために、御使いを派遣なさった。そこで、勅使が讃岐の国へ下られたところ、大師は幼くして、様々な童子たちに交じって遊んでいらっしゃるのをお見かけして、（勅使は）馬から降りて礼拝し、申すには、「あなたは凡人ではありません。その理由は、四天王が白い傘を持って前後にお従いしているからです。きっとこれは、前世において聖人であられた方に違いない」と。
その後、近隣の人々も驚き不思議に思い、御名を「神童」とお呼び申し上げた。今、幼少期の瑞兆を考えてみると、遥かに神異な変化の兆しが現れていた。経の中に、深い位の菩薩（薩埵）が衆生を救う（利生の）相について説かれているように、常に衆生の拠り所となって、転輪聖王の徳を備え、頂上に白い蓋（きぬがさ）を

Part Two
An imperial messenger was dispatched to inquire into the people's hardships and to rectify the errors of local officials. When the imperial envoy traveled down to the province of Sanuki, he happened to observe the Great Master as a young child, playing among a group of boys. Upon witnessing this, the envoy dismounted from his horse, bowed in reverence, and declared: "You are no ordinary person. The reason I say this is that the Four Heavenly Kings are holding white canopies and attending you before and behind. I am now certain that you must be a holy person from a previous life."
After this, the people of the surrounding area were struck with wonder and amazement, and came to call him by the honorific name "Divine Child" (Shindō). Reflecting now upon the auspicious signs of his childhood, they revealed far in advance the portents of a divine and wondrous transformation. As the sutras expound upon the characteristics of a bodhisattva of deep rank (sattva) who works to save sentient beings, he constantly became a refuge for all living beings, was endowed with the virtues of a wheel-turning sage king, and atop his head a white canopy...
