里も平坦で、まるで青い盤のようである。地球説は現実に見えるものに反することがこのようであると言っているのと同様で、古今未曾有の大きな愚かな迷いである。人間の視力は絶対に十里を超えることはできない。江戸の品川の海浜に出て房総の両国を見渡すと、海上わずか二十里にも満たないのに、あの国の地境がはっきりと見えることはなく、ただ山のように青く見えるだけである。これも晴天で雲霧がない時だけのことで、海上に靄がある時は二、三里先も見ることができない。どうして地頂から地平まで一目で見渡せる者がいるだろうか。彼らはとんでもない妄言を発して地球説を否定しようとするが、暗夜の投石のように一つとして当たることはない。天学は測量や測器などがあって、仏家のような空論ではない。彼らが疑う地球渾円四方人居のことも、座りながら推測して立てたものではない。西洋の異人が環海を航行し、東西を巡って実際に大地の円形を見極めたものである。彼らが言う須弥の四洲は転輪聖王が出現しないためか、誰一人として漂流して行った者もいない。全くの片手落ちである。西洋人の地球周旋は眼前の境界であって、疑いを入れる余地はない。コロンブス、バスコ・ダ・ガマのことは職方外紀に記載されている。

The sea stretches flat for miles, like a blue plate. This claim that the spherical earth theory contradicts what we can actually see is the same kind of unprecedented great delusion. Human eyesight absolutely cannot extend beyond ten ri. When one goes out to the seashore at Shinagawa in Edo and looks across at both provinces of Bōsō, even though it is less than twenty ri across the sea, the borders of those lands cannot be seen clearly - they only appear blue like mountains. This is only on clear days without clouds or mist; when there is haze over the sea, one cannot see even two or three ri ahead. How then could anyone see from the top of the earth to the horizon in a single glance? Though they utter such absurd nonsense to refute the spherical earth theory, like stones thrown in the dark, not one hits its mark. Astronomy has surveying and measuring instruments, and is not empty theorizing like Buddhism. The matter of the spherical earth with people living all around it that they doubt was not established through speculation while sitting still. Western foreigners have sailed the surrounding seas, traveled east and west, and actually observed the round form of the earth. Regarding the four continents around Mount Sumeru that they speak of - perhaps because no wheel-turning sage king has appeared - not one person has ever drifted there. It is completely one-sided.
