なす者（もの）もなく次第（したい）〳〵に水（ミづ）まして水底（みなそこ）にしつむもの多（おほ）し
此外（このほか）種々（くさくさ）あはれの有（あり）さま四方（よも）に響（ひゞ）ける喚（さけび）の声々（こえ〳〵）見聞（みきく）
に心（こころ）も消（きえ）て語（ことば）にも尽（つく）しがたく筆（ふで）にも及（およ）びがたしかゝる
中（なか）にも御堂（みだう）に篭（こも）れる人々（ひとひと）は聊（いささか）の怪我（けが）も元（もと）より火（くわ）
災（なん）もあらざれは全（まつたく）御仏の助（たすけ）なりあら有（あり）がたや南無阿（なむあ）
弥陀仏（みたふつ）あら尊（たふと）や弥陀仏（みだぶつ）と唱（とな）ふる声々（こえ〳〵）に忽（たちまち）夢（ゆめ）は覚（さめ）に

助けようとする者もなく、次第に水が増してきて、水底に沈むものが多かった。
このほか、さまざまな哀れな有様、四方に響く叫び声々を見聞きするにつけ、心も消え入るようで、言葉にも尽くしがたく、筆にも及びがたい。そのような中でも、御堂に籠っていた人々は、些かの怪我もなく、もとより火災の難もなかったので、これはまったく御仏のお助けによるものだと、「ありがたや、南無阿弥陀仏、尊いことや、弥陀仏」と唱える声々のうちに、たちまち夢は覚めにけり。時に三月二十四日の夜のことで、すでに夜明けは二十五日となっていた。

There was no one to help them, and as the water gradually rose, many were swallowed up into the depths below.
Beyond this, the various pitiful scenes and the cries echoing in all directions were such that, upon witnessing them, one's heart seemed to vanish entirely — it is impossible to put into words, and the brush falls short of conveying it all. Yet even amid such devastation, those who had taken refuge in the temple hall suffered not even the slightest injury, and there had been no threat of fire — this was surely entirely due to the salvation of the Buddha. With voices crying out in gratitude, "How blessed! Namu Amida Butsu! How sacred! Amida Butsu!" — the dream suddenly broke. This occurred on the night of the twenty-fourth day of the third month, and it was already dawn of the twenty-fifth day.
