なす者（もの）もなく次第（したい）〳〵に水（みづ）まして水底（みなそこ）にしつむもの多（おほ）し
此外種（〻このほかくさ〳〵）あはれの有さま四方（よも）に響（ひゞ）ける喚（さけび）の声々（こえ〳〵）見聞（みきく）
に心（こゝろ）も消（きえ）て語（ことば）にも尽（つく）しがたく筆（ふで）にも及（およ）びがたしかゝる
中（なか）にも御堂（みだう）に篭（こも）れる人々（ひと〳〵）は聊（いさゝか）の怪我（けが）も元（もと）より火（くわ）
災（なん）もあらざれは全（まつたく）御佛（みほとけ）の助（たすけ）なりあら有（あり）がたや南無阿（なむあ）
弥陀仏（みたふつ）あら尊（たふと）や弥陀仏（みだぶつ）と唱（とな）ふる声々（こえ〳〵）に忽（たちまち）夢（ゆめ）は覚（さめ）に

現代語訳
助ける者もなく、次第々々に水は増して、水底に沈むものも多かった。このほか、さまざまな哀れな有り様、四方に響き渡る叫び声の数々は、見聞きするにつけ心も消え入るようで、言葉にも尽くしがたく、筆にも及びがたいほどであった。かかる中にも、御堂に籠もっていた人々は、わずかな怪我もなく、もとより火災もなかったため、まったく御仏のご加護によるものであると、「ああ、ありがたや、南無阿弥陀仏、ああ、尊や、弥陀仏」と唱える声々のうちに、たちまち夢は覚めにけり。時に三月二十四日の夜にして、すでに暁、二十五日のことであった。

There was no one to help them, and as the waters steadily rose, many were swallowed beneath the surface. Beyond this, the countless pitiful sights and the cries of anguish echoing in all directions were such that the heart seemed to dissolve at the mere witnessing of them — beyond the power of words to describe, beyond the reach of the brush to convey. Yet even amid such calamity, those who had taken refuge inside the temple hall suffered not so much as a scratch, and were spared from fire as well — this, surely, was entirely through the protection of the Buddha. "Oh, how grateful — Namu Amida Butsu! Oh, how sacred — Amida Butsu!" — and as these voices of prayer rose up, the dream suddenly broke. It was the night of the twenty-fourth day of the third month, and already the dawn of the twenty-fifth had arrived.
