　迄はほこみぢかの丸木の弓に違ひ無事は本間孫四郎
　か比叡山の戦に熊野武者を射倒せく弓矢を持
　伝へし子孫播州にありといふ是を見し人の物語を聞
　しにほこみぢかの丸木の弓也といふまのあたり薩州侯
　の道中の行烈に持せ給ふかつき弓はほこみぢかの古
　しへに製せし弓也古弓の形を知らざる人は半弓と雖
　島津家は頼朝公より連綿とせし国の守故に自然に
　古風残りて昔の例を引て古弓を行列に持せ給ふこと也
　此所名主は関口何某と称し数百年此地に住居せるよし

　心なくも自然に古き弓矢を残りしものなるべし
　　義経流と称せる兵術に月剣といふ武器有月の形故に
　　月釼と名附しものにや

現代語訳

までは「ほこみじか」の丸木の弓に間違いありません。事実、本間孫四郎が比叡山の戦いで熊野武者を射倒した弓矢を持ち伝えている子孫が播州にいるといいます。これを見た人の物語を聞いたところ、「ほこみじか」の丸木の弓だということです。まのあたり薩摩藩主の道中の行列に持たせなさる梓弓は「ほこみじか」の古代に製作された弓です。古弓の形を知らない人は半弓だと思うでしょうが、島津家は頼朝公より連綿と続いた国の守護であるため、自然に古風が残り、昔の例を引いて古弓を行列に持たせなさることです。この所の名主は関口何某と称し、数百年この地に住居しているとのことです。

何気なく自然に古い弓矢を残しているものでしょう。
　義経流と称される兵術に月剣という武器があります。月の形をしているので月剣と名付けたものでしょうか。

槍は古代には無いもので、月剣は稀に使った人がいるようです。今の世のさつまたは月剣より出たものだといいます。名主の所持している矢の根はかりまたでもなく、月の形をしたものなので、もしかすると月剣より作り始めたのでしょうか。射術家においては分明なことでしょう。

until then were undoubtedly short-tipped (hokomijika) round wood bows. In fact, there are descendants in Harima Province who have inherited the bow and arrows with which Honma Magoshiro shot down Kumano warriors in the battle of Mount Hiei. According to the account of someone who saw these, they were short-tipped round wood bows. Indeed, the catalpa bows carried in the Satsuma domain lord's procession are bows made in ancient times in the short-tipped style. People who do not know the form of ancient bows might think them half-bows, but since the Shimazu family has been the protector of the province continuously since Lord Yoritomo, ancient customs naturally remain, and following old precedents, they have ancient bows carried in their processions. The village headman of this place is called Sekiguchi [someone], and has resided in this place for several hundred years.

He must have casually and naturally preserved these ancient bows and arrows.
　In the military arts called the Yoshitsune school, there is a weapon called gekken (moon sword). It was probably named gekken because of its moon-like shape.

Spears did not exist in ancient times, and it appears that moon swords were used by some people, though rarely. It is said that the satsumata of the present world derives from the moon sword. The arrowhead possessed by the village headman is not a karimata but has a moon shape, so perhaps it began to be made from the moon sword? This would be clear to archery experts.
