　いふて台所へ入ぬ扨はあるし武術をたしなむとのみ思ひ居
　しにやありて木刀の音聞へし故立出見しに彼少女長刀にて
　廿斗の兄を相手として彼所へ飛爰え走り声（コヘ）かけ戦ふ様子
　皆（ナミ）々ならぬ勢ひにて一のほの見ものなりし婦人の武術殊に百姓
　体にては称誉すべきにもあらざれ共男子の気象察しぬ婦人
　の武芸といふは上国中国西国筋にては夢にも知らぬ事にて
　風俗の違ひいはん方無し昔よりも関東武者は剛勇にして上方勢
　五人に関東武者壱人といひしもむべ也大平にいて武芸を忘れさる
　を真武といふ由武士の家に生（ウマ）れ心掛無も多し浮世とは名附し物也

現代語訳

と言って台所へ入った。さてはこの家の主人は武術をたしなむのだろうとばかり思っていると、やがて木刀の音が聞こえてきたので立って出て見ると、あの少女が長刀を使って二十歳ほどの兄を相手として、あちらへ飛びこちらへ走り、声をかけて戦う様子は並々ならぬ勢いで、一級の見物であった。婦人の武術、殊に百姓の身分では称賛すべきことではないかもしれないが、男子のような気概が感じられた。婦人の武芸というものは、上国・中国・西国方面では夢にも知らないことで、風俗の違いは言いようがない。昔から関東武者は剛勇で、「上方勢五人に関東武者一人」と言ったのももっともである。太平の世にあって武芸を忘れないのを真の武というそうだが、武士の家に生まれても心掛けのない者も多い。浮世とは名付けたものである。

それほど遠くない世まで図のようであった地形と見える。洪水の時々、利根川が今のように直線に突き切ったため、下総国堀江村の本田が海中になったものと見える。また記載した所の村は古く、昔の詳細は分からない。この外の村郷は二百年以来、海の干拓地または潮入りの窪地を田畑に開発して村里としたものと見える。

英語訳

Women's martial arts is something completely unknown even in dreams in the upper provinces, central provinces, and western provinces - the difference in customs is beyond description. Since ancient times, Kanto warriors have been known for their valor, and the saying "one Kanto warrior equals five warriors from the Kamigata region" is indeed true. In these peaceful times, not forgetting martial arts is called true warriorship, yet even among those born into samurai families, many lack proper dedication. "Floating world" is indeed an apt name.

In ancient times, the Tone River flowed as shown in the diagram.

Until not so long ago, the topography appears to have been as shown in the diagram. During frequent floods, the Tone River cut straight through as it does now, so it appears that the main rice fields of Horie Village in Shimosa Province became submerged in the sea. The villages recorded here are ancient, and the details of olden times are unclear. The other villages and settlements appear to have been established over the past two hundred years by developing reclaimed land from the sea or tidal marshes into rice fields and settlements.
