　歌と見へ侍りぬ町人持と称して利根川筋に葦の
　附洲或は田場或は畑ましりの地所夥しき事故いかゝ
　の訳ありてかくのことくに町人持のある事やと土人
　に尋しに是は地所の益を取其かわりに川堤の普
　請するよしに答へぬ夫も御普請所と飛〳〵にありて
　鳥渡見ては解し難し町人持の地所は株となりて売
　買せる事にして近き頃迄も金千両宛に売買せし由
　しかれは人知らぬ益もある事也今に言は人手を数〳〵に
　渡りて拾人程の仲間持となり普請所のいたみを村方より

　催促してもはか〳〵敷もなく壱人前の事にあらざれ
　は物入りも以前に倍し売買せる所今はやう〳〵五百両斗
　になりしといふ此初はいかゝの訳ありて町人持となりて
　町人普請とはなりし事にや古しへよりも利をあらそふ
　事は商人に不及とあれは定て町人の大益となる筋ありて
　のことなるへし

よく見えるようです。町人持ちと称して利根川筋に葦の付洲或いは田場或いは畑まじりの地所が非常に多いことなので、どのような訳があってこのように町人持ちがあることかと土地の人に尋ねたところ、これは土地の利益を取る、その代わりに川堤の普請をするためだと答えました。それも御普請所が飛び飛びにあって、ちょっと見ただけでは理解し難いです。町人持ちの地所は株となって売買されることで、近頃まで金千両ずつで売買されたということです。それならば人の知らない利益もあることです。今では人手を数々に渡って十人程の仲間持ちとなり、普請所の損傷を村方より催促してもはかばかしくもなく、一人前のことではないので費用も以前の倍となり、売買された所も今はようやく五百両ほどになったということです。この最初はどのような訳があって町人持ちとなって、町人普請となったことでしょうか。昔より利を争うことは商人に及ばないとあれば、きっと町人の大きな利益となる筋があってのことでしょう。

It appears quite clear. Since there are numerous plots of land along the Tone River called "townspeople's holdings," including reed sandbanks, rice fields, and mixed farmland, I asked the local people what circumstances led to such townspeople's holdings. They answered that this was for taking profit from the land, and in exchange, maintaining the river embankments. However, the official construction sites are scattered here and there, making it difficult to understand at a glance. The townspeople's land holdings became shares that were bought and sold, and until recently they were traded for one thousand ryō each. If so, there must be profits unknown to others. Now the ownership has passed through many hands and become joint ownership among about ten people. Even when the village urges repairs to damaged construction sites, progress is slow, and since it's not a single person's responsibility, expenses have doubled compared to before. Places that were once sold are now worth only about five hundred ryō. What circumstances originally led to these becoming townspeople's holdings with townspeople responsible for construction? Since it is said that competing for profit cannot match merchants, there must surely be some avenue that provides great benefit to the townspeople.
