十一の村が正に衰退し、援助を求めた。政明は隣村(田中村)の民を募って〔困窮する人々を〕救った。上官・民人の命を救ったのは政明の力によるものである。大小の河川はことごとく塞がれ、洪水が那波村に氾濫し、泥が民家百三十四軒を埋めた。倉庫を開いて窮民を養い、流された遺体を収め、棺を用意して各村の仏寺に葬った。布施を賜った。〔割書:流死者はおよそ七十余人〕 わが封内(領内)の水源は厩橋の属村・真壁にある。毎年時期になると人夫を差し配して水柵を設けていたが、泥が押し寄せた日、屈強な人夫八十人が泥の中に落ちた。厩橋の有司は筏を作り、懸命にこれを救い、生き残った者は七十四人、流されて行方不明になった者は六十人であった。〔急ぎ〕使者を〔差し遣わして〕江戸に報告した。 十三日、今の急難は洪水の氾濫である。丹良河が最もひどい。しかし盆地・梁(川筋)の中では人力を用いて掘り開くことが難しく、一日で工事を終わらせようとした。重嶷はすなわち石原重紀および官属数人・人夫百数人を率いて蓮沼村に至り、筏に乗ってこれを掘り開こうとした。「洪水が来る」との流言が広まり、人夫たちが恐れおののいて争って逃げ出し、泥の中に落ちた者が十数人あった。近ごろ水は壅塞した泥の上を流れており、上流が遠くから見ると非常に高く見えたため、人々はそれを大波と見誤ったのである。重嶷はこれを諭して明らかにしたが、人夫たちはあえて進もうとしなかった。そこで重嶷は命じて土神の太鼓を出し、屋根の上に置かせ、人を守らせた。「今日もし上流から洪波が来たならば、太鼓を鳴らして知らせよ。また衆に告げる、太鼓の音を聞いたならば速やかに退くべし。太鼓の音が聞こえなければ退いてはならぬ」と。衆は安心して作業に就き、日が暮れるまでにこれを完成させた。〔割書:重嶷は衆より先に筏に上がり、泥の中に落ちながらも衣を脱ぎ、身をあらわにし、佩刀を帯びたまま退かなかった。衆は感激して、ますます奮励した。〕 十四日、小松原重義(呼び名は剛治、号は醇斎)と磯田邦光を招いて〔以下次頁へ続く〕

Eleven villages were in serious decline and requested aid. Masamasa recruited people from neighboring villages (Tanaka Village) to relieve them. It was through Masamasa's efforts that the lives of both officials and commoners were saved. All rivers, large and small, became completely blocked, and floodwaters inundated the villages of Nawa, with mud burying one hundred and thirty-four private homes. Storehouses were opened to provide for the destitute, floating corpses were collected, coffins were procured, and the dead were buried at the Buddhist temples in each village. Offerings (fuse) were bestowed. [Marginal note: The total number of deaths by drowning was approximately seventy or more.] The source of water within our domain lies at Makabe, a dependent village of Maebashi. Each year, at the appropriate season, laborers were dispatched and water barriers were erected. On the day the mud descended, eighty able-bodied laborers fell into the mud. The officials of Maebashi built rafts and made every effort to rescue them; seventy-four survived, while sixty were swept away and lost. A messenger was urgently dispatched to report to Edo. On the thirteenth day: the urgent crisis of the moment was the flooding. The Tanara River was the most severe. However, within the basin and along the waterways, it was difficult to employ manpower to dig them open, and the intention was to complete the work within a single day. Shigeyuki thereupon led Ishihara Shigenori, several officials, and over a hundred laborers to Hasunuma Village, where they boarded rafts and began to dig the blockage open. A rumor spread that floodwaters were coming, and the laborers, seized with fear, scrambled to flee, and more than ten fell into the mud. In recent days, the water had been flowing over the blocked mud, and the upper reaches, seen from a distance, appeared very high, which caused the people to mistake it for a great flood wave. Shigeyuki explained and clarified the situation, but the laborers still did not dare to advance. Shigeyuki then ordered that the drum of the earth deity (dojin) be brought out and placed on top of a roof, with a person set to guard it. He declared: "If today a flood wave comes from upstream, beat the drum to give warning. And I tell you all: when you hear the drum, retreat promptly; if you do not hear the drum, do not dare to retreat." The laborers settled down and returned to work, and the task was completed by the end of the day.
