……（縁起）とする。また、この所付け（地名一覧）を頼りとして、諸国の道のりを詳しく書き記し出版して、廻国ある人の助けとなしてくださいませ。この縁起の口書き（序文）は、まず所付けを知らせるために、ひとまず大まかに記すものである。
宝永五年（一七〇八）子（ね）の九月 日
右、本文の末に国分寺の所書きが記してある趣でございますが、別本の縁起経にすでに載っておりますゆえ、略させていただきました。

...(this shall be called the) *Engi* (Record of Origins). Furthermore, making use of this location guide (*tokorodzuke*) as reference, (I ask that you) kindly compile and publish a detailed account of the distances along the roads through the various provinces, so that it may serve as an aid to those who undertake the circuit of the provinces. This prefatory note (*kuchigaki*) to the *Engi* is set down here in broad outline, primarily in order to make known the locations (*tokorodzuke*) (of the Kokubunji temples).

Regarding the above: although the main text was to contain location descriptions (*tokorogaki*) of the Kokubunji temples at its conclusion, as these are already included in a separate edition of the *Engi-kyō*, they have been omitted here.
