去程に。其月より只ならぬ御身とならせ給ひ
て。十（と）月（つき）あまり二（ふた）月（つき）を経（へ）て。誕生（たんじやう）まし〳〵て
けり。ころは人皇（にんわう）四十九代。光仁（くわうにん）天皇（てんわう）の御宇（きよう）
宝亀（ほうき）五年かのえ寅（とら）の年。御誕生（たんじやう）有し也。父母（ちゝはゝ）
よろこび御 子（こ）取あげ見給へば。瑠璃（るり）をのべたるご
とくなる若君（わかきみ）也。殊（こと）に御まなこさし常（つね）の人に
かはりければ。まさしく仏（ふつ）菩薩（ぼさつ）の化現（けげん）なるべし
御 霊夢（れいむ）といひ。人がらといひ。つねの人にはあらじ
とたつとひおそれ寵愛（てうあひ）し給へば。見きく人
にいたるまて。もてはやしたてまつらずと

そうこうするうちに、その月から懐妊なさって、十か月と二か月を経て、ご誕生になったのであった。時は人皇四十九代光仁天皇の御代、宝亀五年甲寅の年にご誕生があったのである。父母は喜んで御子を取り上げて拝見すると、瑠璃を延べたような美しい若君であった。特にお目がさし、普通の人とは違っていたので、まさしく仏菩薩の化現であろう。御霊夢といい、人柄といい、普通の人ではあるまいと尊び畏れて寵愛なさったので、見聞きする人に至るまで、もてはやし申し上げないということはなかった。

In due course, from that month she became pregnant, and after ten months and two more months had passed, the birth took place. This was during the reign of the 49th Human Emperor, Emperor Kōnin, in the 5th year of Hōki, the year of the Wood Tiger, when the birth occurred. When the parents joyfully took up the child and looked upon him, he was a beautiful young lord like polished lapis lazuli. Particularly his eyes were striking and different from ordinary people, so he was surely a manifestation of a Buddha or Bodhisattva. Both the divine dream and his character indicated he was no ordinary person, so they revered him with awe and cherished him deeply. Even those who merely saw or heard of him without exception celebrated and honored him.
