【川越の額の事】
其ころ。みかどみことのりあつて。金剛定（こんかうぢやう）寺（じ）
の額（がく）を空海（くうかい）和尚（くはしやう）にかゝせ申すべしとて。勅使（ちよくし）
をたてたまひける。折ふしなつの頃なれば。空
かきくもる。五月雨（さみだれ）に清滝（きよたき）川の水かさまさり。
ておひたゝしく。岸（きし）をひたしければ。高雄（たかを）山へは
中〳〵人のゆきゝもたえて。取りだにもかよ
ひがたかりしかば。ちよくし川のほとりにたゝ
ずみ。いかゞしてかわたるべきとあんじくら
しけるに。もとより空海（くうかい）つうりきじざい
をえたまへは。ほのかに此事をしろしめし。
ちよくしをわたすべき事はいとやすき事
なり。去ながら此人水上をこさん事いとあやう
くおもひたまはん事もやあらん。しよせん
川のむかひに。額（がく）をもたせてこなたより書（かき）て
たてまつるべしと。すゞり筆をもたせ給ひ
て。河のほとりに出むかはせたまひければ。勅（ちよく）
使これを見て。よろこびいさみて申されけるは。
我ちよくをかうむりて。和尚（くはしやう）へまいらんとするに。
にはかに此 河水（かすい）まさつて。むなしく此きしにたゝ
ずむ。ねがはくは和尚（くはしやう）の法力（ほうりき）にて。此河をわた
し給へとのたまひければ。きみ此川をみたらんも
ちよくめいの額（がく）をかゝせ給はんとの御事成べし。

## 【川越えの額の事】
その頃、帝（みかど）より勅命が下り、金剛定寺の額を空海和尚に書いていただくようにと、勅使が遣わされた。折しも夏の頃であったため、空は掻き曇り、五月雨（梅雨の雨）によって清滝川の水かさが増し、流れは激しく岸を浸していた。そのため高雄山へは、とても人の往来も絶えてしまい、渡ることすら難しい状況であった。
勅使は川のほとりに立ち尽くし、どのようにして渡ればよいかと思い悩んでいた。もとより空海は神通力自在を得ておられたので、かすかにこの事情をお知りになり、「勅使を渡らせることは、まことに容易なことである。しかしながら、この方が水上を越えることをたいそう危ういとお思いになることもあろう。それならば、川の向こう岸に額を持たせて、こちらから書いて差し上げよう」と、硯と筆をお持ちになって、川のほとりにお出迎えになった。
勅使はこれを見て、喜び勇んで申し上げるには、「私は勅命を承り、和尚のもとへ参ろうとしたところ、にわかにこの川の水かさが増して、虚しくこの岸に立ち尽くしておりました。どうか和尚の法力によって、この川を渡らせてくださいませ」とおっしゃったので、（空海は）「あなたがこの川を見ておられるのも、勅命の額を書いていただこうとのお気持ちからでありましょう。」

## [The Story of the Plaque Written Across the River]
Around that time, an imperial decree was issued, ordering that the plaque for Kongōjō-ji Temple be written by the Venerable Kūkai, and an imperial envoy was dispatched for this purpose. As it happened to be summer, the sky grew dark and overcast, and the rains of the rainy season (samidare) had swelled the waters of the Kiyotaki River, causing it to flood its banks with tremendous force. As a result, travel to and from Mount Takao had completely ceased, and even crossing the river was exceedingly difficult.
The imperial envoy stood stranded at the river's edge, pondering deeply how he might possibly cross. Kūkai, who had long since mastered the free use of supernatural powers (tsūriki jizai), sensed this situation from afar, and thought: "It would be a simple matter to have the envoy cross over. However, he may well feel it to be perilous to cross over the water. Therefore, I shall have the plaque held on the far bank, and write it from this side." With that, he took up his inkstone and brush and went to meet the envoy at the river's edge.
Upon seeing this, the envoy rejoiced and spoke with great relief: "I had received the imperial command and was making my way to you, Venerable Master, when suddenly the waters of this river rose, and I have been standing stranded on this bank. I humbly beseech you — please use your dharma powers to allow me to cross this river." To this, Kūkai replied: "That you now stand looking upon this river is surely because of the imperial command to have this plaque written."
