【宇治河わたしもりの事】
扨はりまの国より。東国（とうこく）へ御 修行（しゆぎやう）有へしとて
宇治（うぢ）川につかせ給ひて。御 舟（ふね）にめされ。むかひの
きしにいたりしかば。わたしもり舟（ふな）ちんをこ
ひけれは。今身にしたかへる物なし。かさねてえ
さすべしと仰られしかば。船（ふな）人心やさしきも
のにて。御 出家（しゆつけ）にて候へはあたひなくてもくるし
からずとてなをねんごろにつかへたてまつり
ければ。空海（くうかい）ふなばたに船（ふね）といふもん字（じ）を
書（かき）付てえさせ給ふ。此 文字（もじ）をこふ人あらば。代（かはり）
をえてあたへよ。きどく有べしとて去（さり）たまふ

【宇治川の渡し守のこと】
さて、播磨の国より東国へご修行のためにお出かけになるとのことで、宇治川にお着きになり、舟にお乗りになった。向こう岸にたどり着いたところ、渡し守が舟の賃銭を求めた。「今は身に持ち合わせるものが何もない。後日必ずお支払いしよう」とおっしゃったところ、船頭は心やさしい者であって、「ご出家のお方でいらっしゃれば、代金がなくてもかまいません」と言って、なおも丁寧にお仕え申し上げた。そこで空海は舟べりに「船」という文字を書きつけてお与えになった。「この文字を欲しがる人があれば、代金を受け取って与えよ。きっと不思議なことがあるだろう」とおっしゃって、立ち去られた。

【The Story of the Ferryman of the Uji River】
Now, it is said that Kūkai was setting out from Harima Province on a pilgrimage to the eastern provinces. He arrived at the Uji River and boarded a boat. Upon reaching the far bank, the ferryman asked for the boat fare. Kūkai replied, "I have nothing on my person at this moment. I shall surely repay you at a later time." The boatman, being a kind-hearted soul, said, "As you are a Buddhist monk, it matters not that you have no payment," and continued to serve him with great care and courtesy. Thereupon, Kūkai wrote the character for "boat" (船) on the gunwale of the vessel and gave it to the ferryman, saying, "If anyone wishes to have this character, receive payment in exchange and give it to them. Something wondrous will surely come of it." With that, he departed.
