わたし守よろこび御をしへのごとくけづりて人に

現代語訳
渡し守は喜び、お教えのとおりに（舟べりの文字を）削り取って人々に与えたところ、さまざまな病がたちまちに治った。往来する身分の高い人も低い人もこれを伝え聞いて、我も我もと削り取ってもらい受けたので、千度・百度と削っても、削った後にはまた（元通りに）その跡が残らなかった（＝何度削っても文字は消えなかった）。もらい受けた人ごとに代金を受け取ったので、船頭はたちまちのうちに莫大な富を家に積み重ねるようになったと、このように聞き伝えられている。

英語訳
The ferryman, overjoyed, did as he had been instructed: he shaved off the written character from the gunwale and gave it to people, whereupon all manner of illnesses were instantly cured. Word spread among travelers of all ranks—noble and common alike—and one after another they came to receive shavings of the character. Though it was scraped away a hundred times, a thousand times, no trace of the scraping remained afterward—that is, the character always reappeared as before. Since he received payment from every person who came to obtain a piece of it, the boatman swiftly accumulated a great fortune in his household, or so the story has been handed down.
