【高野へ尋入給ふ事】
弘仁（こうにん）七年 孟夏（まうか）の頃。空海（くうかい）城外（じやうぐわい）に出て。畿内（きない）を修（しゆ）
行（ぎやう）まし〳〵て。禅定（ぜんでう）相応（さうをう）の霊崛（れいくつ）伽藍（がらん）建立（こんりう）した
まふべき地をもとめ給ひけるに。大和（やまとの）国（くに）うちの郡（こほり）と云
所にて。一人の猟人（かりうど）に行（ゆき）逢（あい）給ふ。其 形（かたち）よのつねの人には
あらず。たけ八 尺（しやく）ゆたかにして。ほねたかくすぢふとくし
て其色あかし。青（あを）き色（いろ）の衣をきて。弓箭（ゆみや）を帯（たい）し
白（しろき）黒（くろ）き犬二疋したがへり。空海（くうかい）ふしきなる人也

【高野山へ尋ね入られた事】
弘仁七年（816年）、初夏の頃、空海は都の外へ出て、畿内を修行して回られ、禅定に相応しい霊験あらたかな地に伽藍を建立するための場所をお求めになっていた。大和国宇智郡という所において、一人の猟師にお行き会いになった。その姿はどこから見ても普通の人間ではなかった。身の丈は八尺（約2.4メートル）にも余り、骨格は高く筋肉は太く、その肌の色は赤みを帯びていた。青色の衣をまとい、弓矢を帯び、白と黒の犬を二匹従えていた。空海はこれを不思議な人物だとお思いになり、「あなたはいかなるお方ですか。その様子を見るに、久しく野山に慣れ親しんだ方のようですが」とお尋ねになった。

[The Account of Entering and Exploring Mount Kōya]
In the early summer of Kōnin 7 (816 CE), Kūkai ventured beyond the capital and traveled through the Kinai region in ascetic practice, seeking a sacred site suitable for meditative practice upon which to construct a temple complex. In a place called Uchi District in Yamato Province, he happened upon a lone hunter. The figure before him was clearly no ordinary person. Standing well over eight shaku (approximately 2.4 meters) in height, the figure was tall-boned and powerfully built, with a reddish complexion. Dressed in blue garments, bearing a bow and arrows, and accompanied by two dogs — one white, one black — the figure cut a most remarkable appearance. Kūkai, perceiving this to be an extraordinary being, addressed him thus: "Who are you? To judge by your appearance, you seem to be one long accustomed to the mountains and fields."
