我がらん建立（こんりう）のこゝろさし有て。こゝかしことたつね
ありく也。然るへき地やあると問（とは）せたまへば。彼人 答（こたへ）申
けるは。我は南山（なんざん）の犬飼（いぬかい）なるか。野山を領（りやう）する事。其
数（かず）をしらず。其中に幽然（ゆうぜん）たる所有。三面に山つら
なり。山は巽（たつみ）にひらけり。万水（ばんすい）ひかしにながれて。みな
もと一水にあつまれり。昼（ひる）はつねにあやしき雲
そびえ。依るは又 異（きい）なるひかりかゝやく。これ紀伊国（きいのくに）
伊都（いとの）郡（こほり）の南（みなみ）にあたれり。和尚（くはしやう）きたりてすみ
給へ。かならず助成（じよじやう）いたし侍らんといひて。かの犬
をはなちて。其身もともにうせ給ふ

（空海は続けて、）「伽藍を建立したいという志があって、あちこちと尋ね歩いているのです。ふさわしい土地はございますか」とお尋ねになると、その人物が答えて申し上げるには、「私は南山の犬飼いで、野山を治めること、その数は知れないほどです。その中に、ひっそりと静まり返った場所があります。三方を山が連なり、山は巽（東南）の方角に開けています。あらゆる水は東へと流れ、その源はひとつの川に集まっています。昼は常に不思議な雲がそびえ立ち、夜はまた異なる光が輝いています。これは紀伊国伊都郡の南に当たります。和尚よ、来てお住まいになってください。必ずお力添えいたしましょう」と言って、あの犬を放ち、その身もともに（姿が）消えてしまわれた。

(Kūkai continued,) "I have a heart set on constructing a temple complex, and have been traveling here and there in search of a suitable place. Do you know of any appropriate land?" The figure replied: "I am a dog-keeper of the Southern Mountains, and I govern the mountains and fields in numbers beyond counting. Among them is a place of profound stillness and seclusion. Mountains range on three sides, and the mountain opens toward the southeast (the direction of *tatsumi*). All waters flow eastward, their sources gathering into a single stream. By day, mysterious clouds perpetually rise and tower above; by night, a wondrous light shines and glimmers. This place lies to the south of Ito District in Kii Province. Come, Reverend, and make your dwelling there. I shall surely lend you every assistance." With those words, he released his dogs, and together with them, his form vanished entirely.
