是前仏のあそびし。がらんの急基（きうき）といふ事
あきらか也とよろこび給ひけり。此ことみかど
きこしめしをよばれ。希有（けう）なる事とおほし
めし。勅ありて彼（かの）剱（つるぎ）を宮中（きうちう）にめされ。えいらん
まし〳〵御感なゝめならずして。すなはちめし
とゞめをかれし。そのゝちいさゝかたゝりをなす
事侍りしを、うらかたに勅問（ちよくもん）ありければ。かの
御剱（ぎよけん）のわさにやと。そうしけれは。あかゞねの筒（とう）
に入て。もとのことく返しをかれける。さて彼
三 鈷（こ）のかゝり侍りける松の本をしめて御
庵室（あんしつ）をつくられけり今の御 影堂（えいたう）すなはち。これ

なり弘仁（こうにん）九年の春のころ疫癘（えきれい）おこりて一人
により一家にいたり一家より一国にいたり後は
天下のわつらひとなりたまにも死をまぬかる
るはまれ成けりしかれは大かたならぬ骸骨（がいこつ）なれはうつ
みかくすにもいとまあらずして野にみち山に
うつたかうして。あへてあしをいれん地もなく
ちまたにさけふ男女のこゑかなしうして
耳にみてり。みかどこの事をかなしひおほ
しめして。こんしこんていの心経（しんぎやう）をみづから書（しよ）
写（しや）したてまつらせたまひて空海を請
じてくやうさんたんありけるに。いま此

これは前世の仏が遊ばれた伽藍の旧跡（きゅうき）というものであると明らかになった、と喜ばれた。このことを帝（みかど）がお聞き及びになり、希有（けう）なることだとお思いになって、勅命があり、かの剣（つるぎ）を宮中にお召しになり、ご覧になられて、御感激はこの上なく、そのままお手元にお留め置きになった。その後、少しばかり祟りをなすことがあったので、占いによって勅問があったところ、かの御剣の仕業ではないかと申し上げたところ、赤銅（あかがね）の筒に入れて、元のごとく返し置かれた。さて、かの三鈷（さんこ）が引っかかっていた松の根元を標（しめ）として御庵室（あんしつ）を作られた。今の御影堂（みえいどう）すなわちこれ
【天下に疫病が起こり人が死ぬこと】
である。弘仁（こうにん）九年の春のころ、疫病（えきびょう）が起こって、一人から一家に及び、一家から一国に及び、後には天下の患いとなり、たまたま死を免れる者はまれであった。それゆえ、おびただしい骸骨（がいこつ）が積み重なり、埋め隠す暇もなく、野に満ち、山に積み重なって、全く足を踏み入れる地もなく、街では叫ぶ男女の声が悲しく、耳に満ちた。帝はこのことを悲しまれ、金紙・金泥（こんし・こんでい）にて心経（しんぎょう）を自らお書き写しになって、空海を請じて供養・讃嘆があったが、今この
英語訳
This was recognized with joy as the ancient sacred site (kyūki) where the Buddhas of former ages had dwelled. When the Emperor heard of this, he considered it a most extraordinary occurrence and issued an imperial decree to summon the sword to the imperial palace. Upon viewing it, his admiration was beyond measure, and he kept it in his possession. However, thereafter it caused a slight curse or calamity, and upon divination, an imperial inquiry was made. It was suggested that perhaps it was the work of the imperial sword, whereupon it was placed in a tube of red copper (akagane) and returned to its original location. Then, taking as a sacred marker the base of the pine tree upon which the three-pronged vajra (sankō) had lodged, an hermitage was built. This is none other than the present Miei-dō (Memorial Hall).
【On the Pestilence that Spread Throughout the Land and the Deaths of the People】
In the spring of the ninth year of the Kōnin era (818 CE), a pestilence broke out, spreading from one person to an entire household, from a household to an entire province, and eventually becoming a scourge upon the entire realm. Those who managed to escape death were rare indeed. As a result, enormous numbers of corpses piled up, and there was no time to bury or conceal them. The fields were filled with them, and they piled up in the mountains, leaving no ground to set foot upon. The cries of men and women wailing in the streets were sorrowful and filled one's ears. The Emperor grieved deeply over this and personally copied the Heart Sutra (Hannya Shingyō) in gold ink on gold paper, summoning Kūkai to perform a memorial service and offer praises.
