泉（ぜん）苑（えん）のいけのほとりに壇（だん）をかまへ。ちがや
といふ草をもつて。竜のかたちをつくりて
壇（だん）上にすへをき。請雨経（しやううきやう）の法を修（しゆ）し。もみに
もふでいのり給へは。真言（しんごん）の奥旨（おうし）を感（かん）し。祈精（きせい）
の御心ざしに応（をう）じたまひけるにやたちまち
陰雲（いんうん）一天にひきおほひ。竜王すなはち八寸
ばかりの金色（こんじき）の竜に現（げん）し。長（たけ）九尺はかりなる
蛇（じや）のいたゞきに乗（のり）て、池水（ちすい）にうつり来給ふ。よ
のつねの人のまなこにはさへぎらず。池水ざゝ
めけるをとにきこえけるが。実恵（じつゑ）真済（しんぜい）真雅（しんが）真 紹（せう）
堅恵（けんゑ）真暁（しんけう）真然（しんぜん）等の御弟子（でし）たちの御目にのみ

見え給ふ。自余（じよ）の人〳〵すさまじき池のけし
きをみて。いかさま大竜もあらはるへくこそと
かんじあへりける。すなはち此よしをみかどに
そうし給へは。和気（わけ）の真綱（まつな）をちよくしとして
御幣（ごへい）しゆ〴〵の供物（くもつ）をそなへ。ねんころに
まつり申させ給ひけるうちに。八方よりむら
かり来る湿雲（しううん）みねのことく油然（ゆぜん）たるいきほ
ひ雨ふる事 車軸（しやぢく）のごとくにして。国土（こくど）をあま
ねくうるほし。三日の間おやみもなく。一天四海
にそゝきける。されはながく災旱（さいかん）のうれへき
へぬ

現代語訳

泉苑の池のほとりに壇を設け、茅（ちがや）という草を用いて龍の形を作って壇上に据え置き、請雨経の法を修し、ひたすらにお祈りになられたところ、真言の奥深い旨を感得し、祈りの誠のお心ざしにお応えになったためであろうか、たちまち暗雲が空一面に立ちこめ、龍王はすぐさま八寸ほどの金色の龍としてお姿を現し、丈九尺ほどの蛇の頂に乗って、池の水面に移り来られた。普通の人の目には見えなかったが、池の水がざわめく音として聞こえていた。実恵・真済・真雅・真紹・堅恵・真暁・真然などのお弟子たちの目にのみ見えていた。

そのほかの人々は、凄まじい池の様子を見て、「きっと大きな龍が現れるに違いない」と感じ入っていた。さっそくこの旨を帝に奏上なされると、和気の真綱を勅使として御幣や数々の供物を備え、丁重にお祀り申し上げているうちに、八方よりむらがり来る湿った雲が峰のように油然とした勢いで湧き上がり、雨は車軸のように激しく降り注ぎ、国土を広くうるおし、三日の間絶え間なく、天下四方に降り注いだ。かくして長く続いた干ばつの悩みはすっかり消え去った。

At the edge of the pond in Shinsen'en, an altar was constructed, and using a grass called chigaya (cogon grass), a figure in the shape of a dragon was fashioned and placed upon the altar. The ritual of the Sutra for Praying for Rain (Shūukyō) was performed, and earnest prayers were offered repeatedly. Whether it was because the profound essence of the esoteric teachings had been perceived, or in response to the sincere devotion of those prayers, dark clouds suddenly spread across the entire sky. The Dragon King manifested as a golden dragon of about eight sun (approx. 24 cm) in length, riding upon a serpent of about nine shaku (approx. 2.7 m) in height, and moved across the surface of the pond. This appearance was invisible to the eyes of ordinary people, and was perceived only as the sound of the rippling pond waters; yet it appeared to the eyes of disciples alone — Jitsue, Shinzei, Shinga, Shinsho, Ken'e, Shinkō, and Shinzen, among others.

The rest of the onlookers gazed at the awe-inspiring state of the pond and felt with conviction: "Surely a great dragon must be about to appear." This was promptly reported to the Emperor, who dispatched Wake no Matsuna as imperial envoy, bearing sacred offerings of gohei and various other ritual gifts. As these were reverently presented, moisture-laden clouds gathered from all eight directions, rising with the vigorous force of mountain peaks, and the rain fell as heavily as if cart axles were pouring down, thoroughly drenching the land. For three days without pause, the rain poured across the realm and the four seas. And thus the long-endured affliction of drought was at last entirely extinguished.
