両人いさゝかも。ゆだんありては大事（だいじ）なり
ければ。たがひにましろかずいのりあひ給ふ
事七日七 夜（や）なり。空海（くうかい）しゆびんに行をお
こたらせむはかり事に。にはかに御 入滅（にうめつ）のよ
しを披露（ひろう）せられければ。僧俗（そうぞく）かなしひの
なみだにむせび。貴賤（きせん）うれひのこゑをのむ
しゆびんこれを聞き給ひて大きによろこび
法威（ほうい）じやうじゆしたりと。いさみつゝ。すなはち
だんをやぶられける。このときしゆびん目くれ
はなぢ垂（たり）て。心身（しん〴〵）悩乱（なうらん）せられけるが。仏壇（ぶつだん）の
前にたふれふしてつゐにはかなく成給ひけり

現代語訳
両者はわずかでも油断があっては大変なことになるため、互いに一心に祈り合うこと七日七夜に及んだ。空海は、修敏の修行を怠らせようとする策として、にわかに御入滅（お亡くなりになった）の旨を披露された。すると僧俗ともに悲しみの涙にむせび、身分の貴賤を問わず憂いの声を呑んだ。修敏はこれを聞いて大いに喜び、「法の威力が成就した」と勇み立ち、すぐに祭壇を壊してしまった。このとき修敏は目が眩み、鼻血が垂れて、心身ともに乱れ苦しんだが、仏壇の前に倒れ伏して、ついにはかなく亡くなってしまわれた。

英語訳
As even the slightest lapse in concentration could prove fatal for either of them, the two prayed against each other with undivided devotion for seven days and seven nights. As a stratagem to make Shūbin neglect his ascetic practice, Kūkai suddenly announced the news of his own death (御入滅). At this, both monks and laypeople choked with sorrowful tears, and people of all ranks swallowed cries of grief. Upon hearing this, Shūbin rejoiced greatly, crying out "The power of the Dharma has been achieved!" and in his elation, immediately destroyed the ritual altar. At that very moment, Shūbin's eyes grew dark, blood poured from his nose, and both his mind and body fell into utter turmoil. He collapsed prostrate before the Buddhist altar and finally breathed his last.
