【良房卿一家の疫を治給ふ事】
天 長（ちやう）年中（ねんぢう）の事なるに。大師 高雄（たかを）寺（じ）にこもらせ
給ひて。年月をかぎり御 修行（しゆぎやう）有しこと侍りき。
その頃大 納言（なごん）良房（よしふさ）朝臣（あそん）の家中（かちう）に。大に疫病（やくびやう）
おこりて。上下 数（す）十人なやみふしける。良房（よしふさ）此事
をかなしひて、空海（くうかい）をしやうじ。祈（いのり）をうけたて
まつらんと。随身番（ずいじんばん）の長（おさ）をつかひとして応護（をうご）を
かうふるべきよしねんころに申おくりけるに。空
海のたまはく。すべからくまいるへしといへとも高雄（たかを）
の山門（さんもん）をとちて出ざる所願（しよぐはん）侍れば。さて参向（さんかう）

This took place during the Tenchō era. The Great Master had secluded himself at Takao-ji Temple, and had been engaged in religious austerities for a set period of time. Around that time, a great epidemic broke out within the household of Dainagon Yoshifusa no Ason, and several dozen people of all ranks had fallen ill. Grieving over this situation, Yoshifusa sent the captain of his personal guard as a messenger to Kūkai, respectfully requesting that he come and offer prayers on their behalf. Kūkai replied: "Ordinarily I would come, but I have made a vow not to leave Takao, keeping the mountain gate closed, and therefore I am unable to make my way there."
