くならせたまひたりし。そのゝち石（いし）をたゝみその
上に塔婆（たうば）をたてられけり。太上（たいじやう）天 皇（わう）もともに
御なげきあさからずまし〳〵て。実恵（じつゑ）等（とう）の御弟子の
中へ勅書（ちよくしよ）を下（くだ）したまひて。ねんごろに勅弔（ちよくてう）あ
りしとなり。いともかしこきみことのりなりしとか
や。さおてもろ〳〵の大 徳（とく）あるひは公家（くげ）の護持（ごぢ）をなし。
又は別所（べつしよ）の居住（きよぢう）をこゝろざして。おの〳〵雲嶺（うんれい）を辞（じ）
し給ひしに。空海の遺命（ゆいめい）にしたがひて。真然（しんぜん）僧正（そうじやう）の
み。高野（かうや）山（さん）に御とまりありしと也

現代語訳
（大師の御鬚髪が）長くお伸びになっていた。その後、石を積み重ね、その上に塔婆（とうば）が建てられた。太上天皇（上皇）も深く御嘆きになられ、実恵らの御弟子たちの中へ勅書を下されて、ねんごろに勅弔（ちょくちょう）があったとのことである。いかにも畏れ多い御言葉であったということだ。
さて、数多くの高徳の僧侶たちは、あるいは公家の護持僧となり、またあるいは別所（べっしょ）への居住を志して、それぞれ高野山の雲嶺（うんれい）を辞し去られたが、空海の遺命にしたがって、真然（しんぜん）僧正のみが高野山にお留まりになったということである。

...his beard and hair had grown long. Thereafter, stones were piled up and a stupa was erected upon them. The Retired Emperor, too, was deeply grieved, and he sent an imperial rescript to the disciples, including Jitsue, offering heartfelt condolences in the form of an imperial elegy. It is said that the words of the decree were most august and solemn indeed.
Furthermore, the many eminent monks each went their separate ways — some took up the role of guardian priests (*goji*) for noble households, while others resolved to take up residence at various branch temples (*bessho*) — and they departed one by one from the cloud-capped peaks of Kōyasan. However, in accordance with Kūkai's dying wish, it was Sōjō Shinzen alone who remained behind on Mount Kōya.
