御行法の床はむなしくのこりて山風にはらい
御 観念（くはんねん）の窓（まど）ながくとぢて月ひとりすめり。花は根（ね）に
かへり。鳥（とり）は谷（たに）に入りぬ。孤山（こさん）に春 暮（くれ）て禅室（ぜんしつ）日なし。結（けつ）
縁（えん）のあかざる事を思へは。十六 余（よ）回（くわい）のゆふべすみやか也。
出定（しゆつでう）の期約（ごやく）をちぎらんとすれば。五十六 億（おく）のあかつき
はるか也。おの〳〵三 衣（ゑ）のたもとをしぼり。一 鉢（はつ）のあぢは
ひをわすれたり。さても奥院（おくのゐん）といふ所は。かねてより御 入（にう）

（大師の）御修行の床は虚しく残り、山風に払われ、御観念（瞑想）の窓は長く閉ざされて、月だけがひとり澄み渡っている。花は根に帰り、鳥は谷に入ってしまった。孤山に春が暮れて、禅室には日の光もない。（大師との）結縁の尽きることへの思いを巡らせれば、十六余回の夕べはあっという間に過ぎ去ってしまうことよ。出定（しゅつじょう）の期約を心待ちにしようとすれば、五十六億年の暁ははるか彼方である。それぞれは三衣（さんえ）の袂を絞り（涙で濡らし）、一鉢の味わいも忘れてしまった。

**[On the Matter of the Funeral Rites]**
The bed upon which he performed his practices remains empty, swept by the mountain wind; the window before which he sat in meditation is closed forever, with only the moon dwelling there alone and serene. The flowers have returned to their roots, and the birds have retreated into the valley. Spring fades over the solitary mountain, and no sunlight reaches the meditation hall. When one reflects upon the thought that the bond formed with him shall be severed, the evenings of more than sixteen kalpas pass swiftly indeed. And yet, if one tries to look forward to the promised moment of his emergence from meditation, the dawn of five billion six hundred million years hence lies still so very far away. Each disciple wrung out the sleeves of their three robes with tears and forgot even the taste of their single bowl of food.
Now, the place known as the Okunoiin had long been designated as the cave of the nyūjō; and so it was that they conveyed him there. Jitsue, Shinga, Shinnyō, Shinzei, Shinshō, and Shinzen, among others, had a palanquin carried thither, and following the customary observances, the memorial rites were held every seven days.
