てはなたれてきたる舟の。いかなるはかりことにやあ
るらむとうたがひをなして。ふねをかたくふうじ
人をもはたらかさず。ふねをもうごかさず。みな〳〵
すなばまにをひあげ。更にあはれむけしきなく。
かたくばんをつけてまもらせける。其時 賀能（かのう）空（くう）
海（かい）に申されけるは。州（しう）の長（おさ）に書（しよ）をつかはすれども
もちひす。いかゞは成ゆきなんあさまし。進退（しんたい）こゝ
にきはまりぬ。此上は又 和尚（くわしやう）書をつかはして。こゝろ
み給へかしと。申されければ。空海（くうかい）さらはとて賀能（かのう）
にかはりて筆をはしらしめ給ふ。其文つゞまやか
にして。其 理（り）妙（たへ）也（なり）。州（しう）の長（おさ）ひらき見て。再（さい）三これ
を味（あちは）ふに。まことに権化（ごんけ）の筆作（ひつさく）なれば。かゝるめでた
き超世（てうせ）の人を。此頃くるしめまいらせつる。凡夫（ぼんぶ）の
身こそつたなけれとて。先非（せんひ）をくひてすなはち舟
のまもりをゆるし。かへつて人々をいたはり。舟路の
労（つかれ）をなぐさめけり
現代語訳
として流れ着いてきた船の、何かの謀略であろうかと疑いを持って、船を厳重に封鎖し、人も働かせず、船も動かさず、皆を砂浜に追い上げ、全く憐れむ様子もなく、厳重に番兵をつけて監視させた。その時、賀能が空海に申されたことには、「州の長官に書状を送っても用いられない。どうなってしまうのか、情けない。進退ここに極まった。この上は和尚が書状を送って、試してみてください」と申されたので、空海は「それでは」として賀能に代わって筆を走らせなさった。その文章は簡潔で、その理は妙なるものであった。州の長官がそれを開いて見て、再三これを味わってみると、まことに権化の筆跡であったので、「このような立派な超世の人を、この頃苦しめ申し上げていた凡夫の身こそ愚かであった」として、先の非を悔いて直ちに船の監視を解き、かえって人々を労わり、船路の疲労を慰めた。

as a ship that had drifted here on the winds, wondering what kind of plot this might be, they strictly sealed off the ship, allowing no one to work and preventing the ship from moving. They drove everyone onto the beach, showing no signs of compassion whatsoever, and posted guards to watch them strictly. At that time, Kanō said to Kūkai, "Though we send letters to the provincial governor, they are not accepted. What will become of us? This is deplorable. Our situation has reached an impasse. At this point, please, Master, try sending a letter yourself." When he said this, Kūkai replied "Very well then," and took up the brush in place of Kanō. His writing was concise, and its reasoning was sublime. When the provincial governor opened and read it, tasting its meaning again and again, he realized it was truly the brushwork of an incarnate sage, and said, "What a foolish ordinary being I am to have been tormenting such an excellent transcendent person during this time." He repented his previous wrongs and immediately released the ship from surveillance, and instead treated the people with care and comforted them from their fatigue of the sea journey.
