はじめは。他国の人とて。いらへもせざりけれ
ば。かなしひをふくむといへども。いまは。親子（しんし）兄（けい）
弟（てい）のよしみにまさりければ。空海いよ〳〵
たのもしく思召たり。かくて五十八日をへて。
みやこより存（ぞん）問（ぶん）のちよくしをぞくだされ
る。そのぎしきおごそかなり。空海（くうかい）又賀能
にかはりて。入京すへきよしの書（しよ）つくりて
州（しう）の長（ちやう）にあたへたまふに。州の長このよし
を見て尊命（そんめい）もつともなりとて。そのむね
くはしくみかどへそうかし申けれは。みかどえ
いらんあつて。いそぎ御むかひのちよくしを
たまはりける。そのよそほひまことに。びれゐ
なりしありさま。目をおとろかすばかりなり。
大使をむかふるに。七ちんのくらをもつてし。
それよりしもつかたの人には。かざりのくらを
もつてそ。むかへられける。した〳〵みなこゝを
せんどゝ。美（び）をつくし。善をつくして御ともの
ぎしき。ことばにものべかたく。筆にもつくし
がたかりし事共也
現代語訳
初めは他国の人ということで、返事もしなかったので、悲しみを抱いていたけれども、今は親子兄弟の親しみに勝るほどであったので、空海はますます頼もしく思われた。このようにして五十八日を経て、都から安否を尋ねる勅使が派遣された。その儀式は厳粛なものであった。空海はまた嘉能に代わって、入京すべき旨の書状を作って州の長官に与えたところ、州の長官はこの旨を見て、尊いお命令はもっともなことであるとして、その趣旨を詳しく皇帝に奏上したので、皇帝は英断されて、急いでお迎えの勅使を賜った。その装いは真に美麗で、その有様は目を驚かすほどであった。大使を迎えるのには七品の位をもってし、それより下位の人には飾りの位をもって迎えられた。下々の者は皆ここぞとばかりに美を尽くし、善を尽くしてお供の儀式を行い、言葉にも述べがたく、筆にも尽くしがたいことであった。

At first, being people from a foreign country, they did not respond, so there was sadness and resentment. But now, the relationship had surpassed even that of parent and child or brothers, so Kūkai felt increasingly reassured. Thus, after fifty-eight days had passed, an imperial envoy was sent from the capital to inquire about their well-being. The ceremony was solemn. Kūkai, again on behalf of Kanō, wrote a letter stating that they should enter the capital and presented it to the provincial governor. When the governor saw this letter, he said that the noble command was most reasonable, and reported the matter in detail to the emperor. The emperor made a wise decision and quickly granted an imperial envoy to escort them. The attire was truly magnificent, and the spectacle was so dazzling it amazed the eyes. To welcome the ambassador, they used the seventh court rank, and for those of lower status, they used decorative ranks for the welcome. All the lower-ranking people competed to display their finest beauty and virtue in the escort ceremony, creating scenes that were indescribable in words and impossible to fully capture with the brush.
