わかいのちすてにかぎりあれはやうやくつ
きなんとす。大法（ほう）をつたふるにさらに人なし
なんぢすみやかに教（けうけ）をとゝのへて灌頂（くはんぢやう）の
壇（だん）に入たまへとのたまひければ。みな人 舌（した）をふ
るひ。聞もの耳（みゝ）をおどろかし。さしも日本の
しやもんは権化（ごんけ）なりとはきゝしかと。いまた一
めもしり給はぬ。恵果（けいくは）和尚（くはしやう）にまみえ給へば
和尚つふさに御 付法（ふほう）の事をのたまひ。とし頃
両人を御まちありしとの御こと。ほとけのへん
げとはいひながら。まのまへにかゝるふしぎなる
こと共たゝならずこそ思はれさて空海くわん
ちやうしたまはん事を御よろこひまし〳〵
て。教花をとゝのへ道場（だうぢやう）をかざりたまひて。六
月上旬に胎蔵（たいざう）のくはんじやうをうけさせ
たまひ。七月上旬に金剛界（こんがうかい）の識位（しきゐ）をう
け。八月上じゆんに伝法（でんほう）阿闍梨（あじやり）の灌頂（くはんぢやう）をう
けたまひける。此時五百の僧の斎会（さいゑ）をまうけ
てあまねく四 衆（しゆ）にほとこし給ひしかは。青龍
寺大興善寺の大徳みなそのむしろにのそ

「私の命はすでに限りがあり、やがて尽きようとしています。大法を伝えるべき人がまだおりません。あなたはすみやかに教具を整えて、灌頂の壇にお入りなさい」とおっしゃったので、皆は舌を震わせ（驚嘆し）、聞く者は耳を疑いました。あれほど日本の沙門（空海）は権化の者であると聞いておりましたが、まだ一度もお会いになったことのない恵果和尚に初めてまみえたというのに、和尚は詳しく付法のことをおっしゃり、長年二人でお待ちしていたとのお言葉、仏の変化（化身）とはいいながら、目の前にこのような不思議なことが起こるとは、ただごとではないと思われました。さて、空海が灌頂を受けられることを大変お喜びになり、教具を整え道場を飾られて、六月上旬に胎蔵の灌頂をお受けになり、七月上旬に金剛界の識位をお受けになり、八月上旬に伝法阿闍梨の灌頂をお受けになりました。この時、五百人の僧の斎会を設けて広く四衆に施しをされたので、青龍寺・大興善寺の高徳な僧たちもみなその席に列席して、ことごとく喜び、法式をお助けになりました。

"My life is already drawing to its limit and will soon be exhausted. There is no one yet to whom I may transmit the Great Dharma. You must swiftly prepare the ritual implements and enter the platform of abhiṣeka." Upon hearing these words, all present trembled in astonishment, and those who heard were struck with wonder. Although it had been said that this monk from Japan was an incarnation of a sacred being, the fact that the Venerable Huiguo — who had never once laid eyes upon Kūkai before — spoke in such detail of the transmission of the Dharma, and declared that both of them had long been awaiting this moment, was truly extraordinary. Even granting that this was the transformation of a buddha, those present could not but feel that such a wondrous event unfolding before their very eyes was no ordinary occurrence. Thereupon, overjoyed at the prospect of Kūkai receiving the abhiṣeka, Huiguo prepared the ritual implements and adorned the sacred precinct. In the upper days of the sixth month, Kūkai received the abhiṣeka of the Womb Realm (Garbhadhātu); in the upper days of the seventh month, he received the rank of initiation of the Vajra Realm (Vajradhātu); and in the upper days of the eighth month, he received the abhiṣeka of the Dharma-transmitting Ācārya. At this time, a feast gathering of five hundred monks was arranged, and offerings were made widely to the four assemblies. The eminent monks of both Qinglong Temple and Daxingshan Temple all attended the assembly and, rejoicing without exception, assisted in the performance of the ritual rites.
