のたまひけるは。我つたへさつかりたてまつる所の。大
法（ほう）密教（みつけう）流布（るふ）相応（さうをう）の勝地（せうち）あらは此三 鈷（こ）われより
さきに我国にとび行て。木すゑにかゝりて我を
まつべしとてもち給ける三 鈷（こ）を。日本のかたへなげ
させ給へばはるかのこくうにとひあがり。雲のうへに
あらはれて日本のかたとおほしきかたへとびゆ
きけり。いたりえん所はしらされ共。願力（ぐはんりき）のむなし
からざる事をあらはし給ふそ有がたけれまのあ
たりにこれを見る人々かんぜさるはなかりしとかや
まことにありかたきこととも也。いにしへ淮南（くわいなん）の犬た
ちまち天にのぼりし事ふしきのおもひをなし
ける。それは一たんの仙術（せんじゆつ）にて益（ゑき）なきことなり
いま金剛（こんがう）の杵（しよ）はるかにこくうをかけりて和尚の
尊命（そんめい）にしたかふこと皆是三 密（みつ）の加持（かぢ）あふくへき
ことならずや。さて御ふねにめし。万里（ばんり）の海路（かいろ）にお
もむきたまひける。仏神の擁護（おうご）ましませば
じゆんふうに帆（ほ）をあげて二ケ月をへていさゝかの
御つゝがもなく御きてうまし〳〵てつくしにつき給
ひけり。此時御とし卅三なりしとかや
現代語訳
おっしゃったことには、「我が伝え受け申し上げた大法・密教を流布するに相応しい勝地があれば、この三鈷よ、我より先に我が国へ飛び行って、木の梢に掛かって我を待つべし」とおっしゃって、お持ちになっていた三鈷を日本の方へ投げさせなさると、はるか大空へ飛び上がり、雲の上に現れて、日本の方と思われる方角へと飛んでいった。どこに至り着くかは知られなかったけれども、願力の虚しくならないことをお示しになったのはありがたいことで、まのあたりにこれを見た人々で感動しない者はなかったということである。まことにありがたいことであった。昔、淮南の犬がたちまち天に昇ったという故事は、不思議な思いをさせるものではあった。しかし、それは一時の仙術に過ぎず、何ら益のないことである。今、金剛の杵（三鈷）がはるかに虚空を駆け巡り、和尚の尊いご命令に従うこと、これはみな三密の加持の力によることであり、仰ぎ尊ぶべきことではないか。さて御船にお乗りになり、万里の海路へとお向かいになった。仏神のご加護がおありになったので、順風に帆を上げて二か月を経て、少しもご難儀なく御帰朝になり、筑紫（つくし）にお着きになった。この時、御年は三十三歳であったとのことである。

He declared: "If there exists a superior place suited for the propagation of the great Dharma and esoteric teachings that I have received and transmitted, then let this sanko (三鈷, three-pronged vajra) fly ahead of me to my homeland, catch upon the branches of a tree, and await my arrival." So saying, he cast the sanko he had been holding toward Japan. It soared up into the vast sky, appeared above the clouds, and flew off in the direction believed to be Japan. Though it was not known where exactly it would come to rest, how wondrous it was that he thus demonstrated the truth that the power of vows (ganriki) is never in vain. It is said that there was not a single person among those who witnessed this with their own eyes who was not deeply moved. Truly, it was a most awe-inspiring occurrence. The old tale of how the dogs of Huainan (淮南) instantly ascended to heaven inspires a sense of wonder, yet that was merely a temporary feat of Taoist sorcery, of no lasting benefit to anyone. Now, the vajra of diamond (the sanko) soared through the vast sky, obeying the venerable command of the master—was this not entirely owing to the power of the Three Mysteries (sanmitsu) and their sacred empowerment (kaji)? Thereafter, he boarded the ship and set out upon the sea voyage of ten thousand leagues. Under the protection of the buddhas and gods, he raised his sails to favorable winds, and after two months, he returned to Japan without the slightest mishap, arriving at Tsukushi (筑紫, Kyushu). At that time, it is said that he was thirty-three years of age.
