【明州より日本へ三鈷をなげ給ふ事】
さてかのじゆずをながく御身にしたかへて。国に
かへり給ても。常につまぐりもち給ふが。いまに
つたへて東寺（とうじ）におさまり。たからとぞなりに
ける。さてみかどに御いとまごひ有ける頃は元和（げんわ）
元年の八月とかや。日本の大 同（どう）元年にあた
りしなり。扨 明州（めいしう）の津と云ところにうち出給ひ
ふなよそほひまし〳〵けるに。貴賤（きせん）御なごりを
おしみたてまつり。僧俗（そうぞく）ちまたに市をなしておく
り奉りけり。已（すで）に御舟のともづなをとかんとしける
とき。空海人〳〵にいとまごひまし〳〵てのち。磯（いそ）べ
にたち給ひて。東の方にむかつて御持念（ぢねん）あつて

さて、あの数珠を長く身につけられて、国（日本）にお帰りになった後も、常に手でつまぐりお持ちになっていたが、その数珠は今に伝わり、東寺に納められて、宝となっている。さて、（唐の）帝にお暇乞いをなさった頃は元和元年の八月とかいうことで、日本の大同元年にあたるのである。そうして明州の津（港）というところに出られ、舟の準備をなさっていると、身分の高い者も低い者も別れを惜しみ申し上げ、僧侶も俗人も街道に市のように集まってお見送り申し上げた。すでに御舟の艫綱（ともづな）を解こうとしていた時、空海は人々にお暇乞いをなさった後、磯辺にお立ちになって、東の方に向かって御持念（ごじねん）があって、

【The Matter of Throwing the Sanko (三鈷) from Mingzhou to Japan】
Now, having kept those prayer beads on his person for a long while and even after returning to his home country (Japan), he always held them in his hands, working them through his fingers. Those very beads have been handed down to this day and are enshrined at Tō-ji Temple, where they have become a great treasure. It is said that the time of his leave-taking from the (Tang) Emperor was in the eighth month of the first year of Yuanhe, which corresponded to the first year of Daidō in Japan. Setting out from the port known as Mingzhou, as he was making preparations to board the ship, both the high-born and the low-born lamented the parting and saw him off, with monks and laypeople alike crowding the streets like a marketplace to bid him farewell. Just as the mooring ropes of the ship were about to be cast off, Kūkai took his leave of the people gathered there, then stood upon the shore, turned to face the east, and engaged in deep meditative prayer (gojinen), whereupon...
