所此身すなはち大日如来なりと申さるゝに
諸宗のがくしやこれをゆるさず。死（し）せずは
いかでか仏 体（たい）をえんと。さま〴〵これを論す
るに。空海さらにまけ給はず。つゐにあまたの
学者（がくしや）たち。口をとぢ給ふ。みかど勅（ちよく）して仰せ有
けるは。空海の弁舌（べんぜつ）川をながして其理又きは
まれり。さりながらかなしくはそくしん成仏の
しるしをみんと有ければ。くうかいはすなはち
五 蔵（ざう）三摩地観（さんまぢくはん）にいりて。智拳（ちけん）の印（ゐん）をむすび

給へば。いたゞきに。あしゆく。宝性（ほうしやう）。みだ。しやか。大
日。五仏の宝冠。あらはれ。五色の光明をはなち。
御身すなはち。金色の仏 体（たい）と成て。大れんげに
座し給へば。こくうに花ふりくだり。いきやうくん
じ。さこんの桜。右近（うこん）の橘。一 時（し）に花さき。みのり
ければ。さながら浄土のことくなり。其時みかどを
はしめ奉り。三 論法相（ろんほつさう）。けごん。天 台（だい）の学者（がくしや）道昌（だうしやう）。
源仁（げんにん）道雄（だうなう）円澄（えんてう）其外。公卿（くきやう）臣下まで。手をあはせ
かうべをかたふき。礼拝し給ひけり

現代語訳

この身体がそのまま大日如来であると申されたが、諸宗の学者たちはこれを認めなかった。「死ななければどうして仏の身体を得ることができるのか」と、様々にこれを論じたが、空海はまったく負けることがなかった。ついに多くの学者たちは口を閉ざしてしまった。帝は勅して仰せになったことには、「空海の弁舌は川の流れのようで、その理もまた極まっている。しかしながら、ぜひとも即身成仏の証を見たい」とあったので、空海はすぐに五蔵三摩地観に入り、智拳印を結ばれた。すると頭上に阿閦、宝生、阿弥陀、釈迦、大日の五仏の宝冠が現れ、五色の光明を放った。御身はそのまま金色の仏身となって、大蓮華に座されると、虚空に花が降り下がり、左近の桜、右近の橘が一時に花咲き実ったので、まるで浄土のようになった。その時、帝をはじめ奉り、三論・法相・華厳・天台の学者である道昌、源仁、道雄、円澄、その他公卿・臣下まで、手を合わせ頭を傾けて礼拝されたのであった。

this body is itself Dainichi Nyorai (Mahavairocana Buddha), but the scholars of various schools would not accept this. They argued in various ways, saying "How can one obtain the Buddha-body without dying?" However, Kukai was not defeated at all. Finally, many scholars fell silent. The Emperor issued an edict saying, "Kukai's eloquence flows like a river, and his reasoning is also profound. Nevertheless, I would like to see proof of sokushin-jobutsu." Therefore, Kukai immediately entered the Five-Storehouse Samadhi meditation and formed the Wisdom Fist mudra. Then, above his head appeared the jeweled crowns of the Five Buddhas: Ashuku (Akshobhya), Hosho (Ratnasambhava), Amida (Amitabha), Shaka (Shakyamuni), and Dainichi (Mahavairocana), radiating light of five colors. His body became a golden Buddha-form seated on a great lotus. Flowers fell from the sky, and the cherry trees of Sakon and the orange trees of Ukon bloomed and bore fruit all at once, making it seem like the Pure Land itself. At that time, beginning with the Emperor, scholars of Sanron, Hosso, Kegon, and Tendai schools including Dosho, Gen'nin, Dono, and Encho, as well as court nobles and retainers, all pressed their palms together, bowed their heads, and paid reverence.
