弘仁（こうにん）七年。空海僧 都（づ）四十三才にして。わかすむべき
ところやあると。諸国をたづね給ふに。紀（き）の国高（かう）
野山（やさん）を御らんじつけて。則（すなはち）此山にのぼりたまふ
道にいつくしき女 房（ばう）にあひ給ふ。空海にかたり
ていはく。我は是この山の神なり。丹生（にふ）の明神
と名づく。われすでに久しく。もろ〳〵のくるし
みをうけて。これをのがれんとするに。其人
なし。今さいはいに大ぼさつにあひ奉ること。苦（く）
をのがるゝの時いたれり。さらば道しるべせん
とて。山の中（なか）にいたりければ。かのもろこし明（みやう）

州（じう）の津（つ）よりなげ給ひし所の三 鈷（こ）。ひかりを
はなちて。松の枝にかゝれり。それより此松を三
鈷（こ）の松とはなづけたり。空海仏法けちえん
の地なりとて。慈尊（じそん）三 会（ゑ）のあかつきにいたる
まて。ひみつ蔵（ざう）のともし火をかゝげん為（ため）に。十六
丈（ぢやう）の大 塔（たう）をこんりうし。過去（くわこ）七仏の大まんだら
をあんぢし。両部の尊体（そんたい）をこめられ。高野山 金（こん）
剛峯寺（がうぶうじ）とぞつけられける。されば丹生（にふ）の明神は是
天せう太神の変作（へんさく）し給ふところ。則高野山の
鎮守（ちんじゆ）とさため給ひけり

現代語訳

弘仁七年、空海僧都四十三歳のとき、住むべき場所があるかと諸国を訪ね歩いていたところ、紀伊国の高野山をご覧になって、すぐにこの山に登られた。途中で美しい女房に出会われた。空海に語って言うには、「私はこの山の神である。丹生明神と名乗る。私はすでに長い間、様々な苦しみを受けており、これから逃れようとするが、その人がいない。今幸いに大菩薩にお会いできたことで、苦から逃れる時が来た。それでは道案内をしよう」と言って、山の中に至ると、かの唐の明州の津から投げられた三鈷杵が光を放って松の枝にかかっていた。それよりこの松を三鈷の松と名付けた。空海は仏法結縁の地であるとして、弥勒菩薩の三会の暁に至るまで、秘密蔵の灯火を掲げるために、十六丈の大塔を建立し、過去七仏の大曼荼羅を安置し、両部の尊体を込められ、高野山金剛峯寺と名付けられた。そうであるから丹生明神はこれ天照大神の変化して現れたところであり、すなわち高野山の鎮守と定められたのである。

In the seventh year of Kōnin (816 CE), when the monk Kūkai was forty-three years old and held the rank of sōzu, he was traveling throughout the provinces seeking a suitable place to reside. Upon seeing Mount Kōya in Kii Province, he immediately climbed this mountain. On the way, he encountered a beautiful court lady. She spoke to Kūkai, saying, "I am the deity of this mountain, called Niū Myōjin. I have already endured various sufferings for a long time and seek to escape from them, but there has been no one to help. Now, fortunately meeting the great bodhisattva, the time has come to escape from suffering. Therefore, I shall guide your way." When they reached the interior of the mountain, the three-pronged vajra that had been thrown from Mingzhou Harbor in China was emitting light and hanging from a pine branch. From then on, this pine was named the "Three-Pronged Pine." Kūkai, recognizing this as a place for forming connections with the Buddhist dharma, built a sixteen-jō tall great pagoda to hold the lamp of the secret treasury until the dawn of Maitreya's three assemblies. He enshrined the great mandala of the seven past Buddhas and enshrined the sacred forms of both realms, naming it Mount Kōya Kongōbu-ji Temple. Therefore, Niū Myōjin is a manifestation of Amaterasu Ōmikami, established as the guardian deity of Mount Kōya.
