之段御目付中へ申達候得ハ月番市村勘右衛門方被申聞候ハ上之段ニ有之本番外之次
境目へ白板壱枚入夫ゟ下之段之頭ゟ上へ上り次第繰上候而残候分ハ下之段ニ差置候様
被申聞仍之為手伝御坊主壱人差越候様ニ小頭五嶋龍斎へ申遣候処龍斎申候ハ是迄
差物掛替等ニ手伝罷出候儀覚不申候間御坊主共罷出候様難申付候由申ニ付則其趣拙者

之由尤御座所御住居被為成候而も御坊主共を御本丸へ召連取扱為致候得共毎度之
事一枚位ニも呼出シ候も手間取面倒ニ存召連候荒子ニくらかけ出入等取扱為致懸板
之事ハ自身はめはつしいたし相済候併此末御坊主共次第ニ替り右之訳を覚候者も

記録 絵奉行岩佐弥五太夫が差し出した書付
一、指物板一双分九十四境、上の段は本多内蔵助殿より本番外白石十右衛門方まで八十四分に節がある。下の段九十四境は皆詰まっており、その所へ末の番外門野九右衛門の指物を差し入れるにつき空き所がない段について御目付中へ申し達したところ、月番市村勘右衛門方より申し聞かされたことには、上の段にある本番外の次の境目へ白板一枚入れ、それより下の段の頭より上へ上がり次第に繰り上げ、残った分は下の段に差し置くよう申し聞かされた。よって手伝いのため御坊主一人を差し越すよう小頭五島龍斎へ申し遣わしたところ、龍斎が申すには、これまで差物掛け替え等に手伝いに参ったことは覚えがないので、御坊主共を参らせるよう申し付けることは難しいとのことであった。そこでその趣を拙者方より御目付中へ申し達したところ、先の格例をよく調べ承るよう勘右衛門方より申し聞かされたので、先役原口惣太夫方へ聞き調べたところ、近い例では御入部の節に総指物の色絵繕いがあったにつき御坊主一人をその手伝いのため差し越すよう小頭水野務斎方へ申し遣わし受け取ったと承った。さらに先の役中山十兵衛方へ参り承り調べたところ、古来御本丸御住居の節には差物一枚でも御坊主共へ申し付け掛け外しをさせていたとの内田十郎右衛門の話であった。もっとも御座所御住居をなされても御坊主共を御本丸へお召し連れ取り扱いをさせているが、毎度のことで一枚位でも呼び出すのも手間取り面倒に思われ、お召し連れの荒子にくらかけ出入等の取り扱いをさせ、掛け板のことは自身ではめはずしをして済ませている。併しながらこの先御坊主共が次第に替わり、右の訳を覚えている者もいなくなるであろうから、そちらでよくこの趣を承知されるのがよろしいと、七郎右衛門方より十兵衛方へ話があった。

1. Identification board sections totaling 94 divisions: The upper section from Lord Honda Kuranosuke to regular non-duty Shiraishi Jūemon has 84 divisions with joints. The lower section of 94 divisions is completely filled, and when the junior non-duty Kadono Kyūemon's placard was to be inserted, there was no available space. When this was reported to the inspectors, Monthly Supervisor Ichimura Kanemon instructed that a white board should be inserted at the boundary next to the regular non-duty position in the upper section, and from there, starting from the head of the lower section, everything should be moved up in order, with the remainder placed in the lower section. Therefore, one monk was to be sent as assistance, and this was communicated to Section Head Goshima Ryūsai. However, Ryūsai replied that he had no recollection of sending assistance for placard replacements and found it difficult to order the monks to go. This was then reported to the inspectors, who instructed through Kanemon to thoroughly investigate precedent. When inquiring with former official Haraguchi Sōdayū, it was learned that in a recent example during a lord's entry into the domain, when there was repair work on the colored paintings of all placards, one monk was sent as assistance upon request to Section Head Mizuno Musai. Further investigation with former official Nakayama Jūbei revealed that from ancient times, during residence in the main keep, even for a single placard, monks were ordered to handle the mounting and removal, according to Uchida Jūrōemon's account. Although monks are brought to the main keep to handle affairs even when the lord resides in his quarters, calling them out for even a single placard every time was considered troublesome and time-consuming, so the accompanying servants handle the mounting and dismounting of entrance equipment, while the hanging boards are personally attached and removed. However, as the monks gradually change over time and those who remember these procedures disappear, it would be advisable for you to thoroughly understand these matters, as conveyed from Shichirōemon to Jūbei.
