Regarding Treasury Guards and Mikuni Post Station Harbor New Guardhouse Personnel — On August 16, Jōkyō 4 (1687), ordered to be under the supervision of the metsuke (inspectors) 1. Eight Lower Treasury Guards — Originally eleven koku, but since the half-stipend order, thus seven koku each for two men, selected from mochizutsu kogashira (musket unit leaders), under the supervision of the monthly rotating metsuke 【Red notation】△When there are vacancies for Treasury Guards and other checkpoint guards at various locations, it is established practice from precedent to fill them with meritorious mochizutsu ashigaru (musket foot soldiers). Among these: one from three Itatori checkpoint guards, one from three Kinome checkpoint guards, one for Mikuni town, one Kōno harbor guard—these are supervised by the magistrates, and when vacancies occur, they should be filled according to precedent. This was decided after consultation on July 21 of the Year of the Rooster and communicated to the magistrates. 1. In the records of Kanbun 9 (1669), regarding Treasury Guards, it is recorded as established precedent that meritorious persons from among the mochizutsu ashigaru should be appointed in order. 1. On September 16, Kyōhō 13 (1728), two of the eight Lower Treasury Guards were reduced, making it six people 《marginal note: The matter of it becoming eight again appears two pages later in the Gembun 3 records》 1. In the Tenmei 8 (1788) records, appearing in the section on promotions from various units—see for reference. This explains why the Lower Guards changed from six to five people. 1. When appointing Lower Treasury Guards, the established practice is to send that person along with members of his unit to the castle deputy's office, stating that since this person has been appointed as Lower Treasury Guard and will henceforth enter and leave the castle, notification must be given. 1. In Genroku 15 (1702), regarding Lower Treasury Guard Kataoka Tokuemon falling ill at his post, this appears in the section on sick persons in the gates section. 1. In August, Kyōhō 2 (1717), regarding the death of Treasury Lower Guard Mori Gen'suke and the promotion of Nagai Mozaemon from Asami Tokuemon's unit to replace him—this appears in the promotions section. 1. In the records of May 26, Kyōhō 1 (1716), word came from Edo that dog-handler leader Nomura Tomoemon was to be appointed by special favor to replace Lower Treasury Guard Nanbu Tokuemon. Though this was a promotion from mochizutsu kogashira, it was by special favor. However, though previously ten koku, it was reduced to the standard seven koku. 1. In Kyōhō 12 (1727), there are records of a Treasury Guard giving written notification to the town magistrate when borrowing a town residence. 1. On February 13 of the same 14th year (1729), when Lower Treasury Guard [name unclear] Riemon had difficulty with his assigned residence and sought a house in Abura-machi, the same procedure applied. However, it was ordered that he should affix his seal according to the town office's instructions. 1. In the same 19th year (1734), regarding substitute duty when Treasury Guards fell suddenly ill, there are records in the duty section under illness. 1. In Kan'en 2 (1749), there are records that when Lower Treasury Guard Ōkoshi Den'emon fell ill en route and could not perform his guard duty, he was confined, but through merciful consideration was promptly pardoned. 1. On June 12, Castle Deputy Ariga Hayato sent Yoriki Kamiya Hanemon as messenger to Iinuma Kanbei's residence regarding Lower Treasury Guard Kataoka Tokuemon, who while on duty fell ill at his post and appeared to be in critical condition. Having learned of this through Hayato's unit, he reported his understanding. Since a foot soldier inspector and attendants would also be dispatched, he requested that one yoriki be sent at that time. Accordingly, Foot Soldier Inspector Nagata Sakubei, two men from the inspector's unit, and Yoriki Kamiya Hanemon examined him together and found his condition beyond recovery, therefore...
