[Right folio] For the purpose of providing an account — a composition concerning the earthquake, the blockage of the Sai River by landslide fill, and the circumstances of the water's recession. Perhaps even an earthquake follows the principle of yin and yang. Iwakura Mountain pushed and buried (the valley of) Hanakura in the latter part of the third month; before anyone knew it, the fill extended as far as Magose, and the belly (i.e., the bed and breadth) of the river naturally swelled into something resembling a great sea — not letting even a drop of its pledge escape — and as the days piled up, the waters of some seven ri were stored up in one great expanse. How pitiful, the villages along the riverside! One might have worried it would be like carrying a child for ten months, yet within twenty days and nights, the backed-up waters were expelled in the middle of the fourth month; (the flood) swept down to Kawanakajima and as far as Echigo, like a great storm of water drawn down from upstream. And then the delivery was peaceful — the god surely abides above the garden (i.e., at the head of the estate). Yet for Hanakura, what remains after the birth upon the embankment is [Left folio] like the headache of a difficult afterbirth. And perhaps out of anxiety over the continuing devastation — the earthquakes continue to shake, little by little, with the plodding pace of the Sheep (未, the eighth sign), but as the tremors gradually move toward the year of the Monkey (申), the god of Kashima and Fudō-son shall protect us — how grateful we are! This account is not written with any literary skill. Yet thinking that descendants in future generations may also read this, and as an admonishment never to neglect devotion to the gods or acts of charity, I have set it down, humble as my thoughts may be. Here, as noted in the preceding text — deep in the Tojiri River, that which became a pond of fill from the great earthquake at Hanakura: before the Sai River's blockage was broken through and expelled, the fill of this pond was breached, and the water surged forth —
