大 地（ぢ）震にて始￣メ トロ〳〵とゆり出し其後ひき
続（つゝい）て大地震となりやゝしばらく家居（いへい）倒（たを）
るゝ斗りにて只思ひがけなく皆地に伏（ふ）し
畳に伏し柱（はしら）をいだき垣（かき）を杖（つへ）にするも皆
其身の全（まつた）き事のみ祈（いの）る中に老（らう）人の出て
大道へ出よとのゝしるを聞伝へ銘々板を並べ

大地震の記録
これは文政十三年（庚寅）七月二日、昼の七つ時（午後二時頃）に、京都で大地震が起きた時のことである。最初はトロトロとゆっくり揺れ始め、その後続けて大地震となった。しばらくの間、家屋が倒れるほどの揺れが続き、人々はただ思いがけず皆地に伏し、畳に伏し、柱にしがみつき、垣根を杖代わりにしながら、皆ひたすら自分の身が無事であることを祈るばかりであった。その中で、ある老人が出てきて「大通りへ出よ」と大声で叫ぶのを聞き伝えて、人々はそれぞれ板を並べ（て道を作り）……

Record of the Great Earthquake
This is an account of the great earthquake that struck Kyoto on the second day of the seventh month of Bunsei 13 (1830, the year of Kanoe-Tora), at around the hour of the seventh bell in the afternoon (approximately 2 o'clock in the afternoon). At first, the ground began to shake slowly and gently, then continued into a tremendous earthquake. For some time, the shaking was strong enough to topple houses, and people unexpectedly fell to the ground, lay prostrate on their tatami mats, clung to pillars, and used garden fences as walking sticks — all while praying solely for their own safety. Amid all this, an elderly man came out and cried out loudly, "Get out to the main street!" Upon hearing this passed along, people each laid out boards (to make a path)...
