Amid all these conversations, the rumbling tremors continued ceaselessly without pause. There were countless people who propped up tottering old houses and old earthen storehouses with poles and beams to keep them from collapsing. People hurriedly moving house were bustling about here and there. By the fourth day, everyone began to feel bodily exhaustion, and they merely dozed off where they were until the fifth day arrived. People were beyond knowing how to express their feelings — whether to dance for joy or stamp their feet in despair. Through the sixth, seventh, and eighth days, the sky remained cloudy without a drop of rain, and at around the Hour of the Ox (approximately 2 a.m.) and the Hour of the Tiger (approximately 4 a.m.), the ground shook again quite strongly with rumbling, and everyone went out into the main streets again, murmuring things like, "Could this be the aftershocks of the seven days and seven nights?" As they talked and chanted prayers against the tremors, the ninth day came, yet the rumbling still had not ceased from time to time. It was truly an unprecedented catastrophe, and there was nothing to do but pray to the gods, trust in the Buddha, and conduct oneself with caution.
A verse composed as a reminder:
Struck on the head by thunder,
and by earthquake pinched on the rear —
Heaven's scolding upon us.
