(As for the Nakakawauchi-guchi,) it shall be left as it is. Should the enemy advance out onto the Ōmi road, [marginal note: "Gōshū (Ōmi Province)"] Hideyoshi shall ride out from Odani, followed by Nagahide riding from Sawayama in Ōmi Province; the two of them together shall drive the enemy in and pursue and cut them down—victory in this manner shall be assured. With these orders given, all the forces withdrew to Gifu in Mino Province.
Item: On the third day of the eighth month of Genki 2 (1571), at Lord Nobunaga's siege fort at Kinome, Higuchi Saburōbei was on garrison duty as the month's watch commander. While he had been diligent at first, as time wore on a certain carelessness had crept in, and the watch-posts were being kept somewhat negligently. The ikki forces sent a messenger with the following proposal: "You should withdraw from this place. As for your lives, we shall give them no concern [i.e., we shall spare them]." Upon hearing this, Higuchi reflected: "If I could hold out two or three more days, Hideyoshi would surely come to our relief—but hemmed in as we are in the innermost keep, it is difficult to buy any more time." And so...
