【Right folio】 (Higuchi) opened the castle gates and withdrew. Shortly thereafter, when Hideyoshi arrived in pursuit, the ikki forces, having appointed capable rōnin as their commanders, saw the approaching forces and withdrew with their men to their respective fortified camps. Hideyoshi then added further fortifications to the stronghold at Kinome and handed it over to Isono and Aibe. Hideyoshi went to Gifu to report these matters to Lord Nobunaga, whereupon Nobunaga became furious and confined Higuchi to Asama in Ise Province, later ordering him to commit seppuku. At this time, it is said that Hideyoshi spoke unfavorably to (Nobunaga) regarding Higuchi's fate. 【Left folio】 Hideyoshi had originally distinguished himself at Kanegasaki in Tsuruga, Echizen Province, during Lord Nobunaga's retreat, when not a single person volunteered to remain behind as rearguard. Hideyoshi alone stepped forward and served as the rearguard (a celebrated act of loyalty). That summer, Lord Nobunaga issued orders, sending Hideyoshi to the residence of Takenaka Hanbee, and had him bring over to their side Higuchi Saburōbyōe, who served as deputy commander (jindai) for Hori Jirō, a retainer (hitomochi) of the Azai clan. At that time, (Nobunaga said to Hideyoshi): "You are a man of exceptional ingenuity. Apply yourself night and day without rest to the scheme of winning over Azai's retainers to our side and bringing about Azai's defeat. Should you accomplish this and defeat Azai, I shall grant you Azai's former domain and position." With this pledge made, (Hideyoshi undertook the task).
